Not really a review. Just some thoughts.....
My expectations were sky-high. I know what "Into The Spider-Verse" brought to the table. It was a boundary-pushing work of art that changed mainstream animation forever. When they announced two sequels, I was equally excited and worried. It was hard to imagine the filmmakers topping what was accomplished in the original.
I shouldn't have doubted these guys. Because, "Across the Spider-Verse" is a jaw-dropping piece of cinema. Like, truly... This ain't just a "great superhero movie". This ain't just a "great family movie". This ain't even just a "great sequel". We're in the rarified air of "instant masterpiece" territory. "Across the Spider-Verse" represents what's possible in mainstream blockbuster filmmaking.
The mix of animation styles, all seamlessly working together cohesively, should be impossible. Like, seriously. We're talking stop motion, 2D hand-drawn, collage, anime, etc. ALL of it appears here, and ALL of it works. It's downright experimental at points, boldly forsaking traditional visual storytelling for something far more surreal and emotion driven. It's not hyperbole to say it's jaw-dropping what was accomplished here.
And, that's not even talking about the story or the screenplay. There's this perpetual sense of motion to how the story unfolds, like obsessively flipping through a comic book. It's a celebration of everything that makes Spider-Man such a compelling character. It's best not knowing much about the film going in, because this thing goes to some pretty audacious places. Impressively, it ends with a cliffhanger that also serves as a satisfying conclusion in its own right. Like, y'all... Do you know how hard it is to do an effective cliffhanger that also serves as a great ending?
If you haven't, you owe it to yourself to see this on the biggest screen you can find. This is the upper echelon of mainstream blockbuster cinema, and I can't wait to see it again. And again. And again.
