Tyson was definitely a lot of hype.

Now, am I saying that Tyson was trash?

Of course not.

What I am saying is, Tyson was a true cash cow and his people weren't trying to put him in front of dudes who could handle what he was dishing out.

A mixture of both in the sense that he was a phenomenal product and easy to market. The downfall of Mike Tyson the boxer is a direct result of the death of Cus D'Amato. I'm not a believer in the train of thought that Mike was a hype train.

I mean obviously Cus couldn't live forever but the kind of restraint Mike needed to show as a law abiding citizen he didn't and there was nobody to tell him otherwise.

That's one thing that makes Floyd so great. He was self motivated, extremely disciplined, a student of the game to the point where he's another coach in his own corner, and throughout all of the circus and extravagance was able to keep it all together mentally.

Floyd had 2 uncle's and a father deep in boxing, two being known of worldwide. The fact they weren't completely well off is the cherry on top.

Floyd lost snr to jail but uncle Roger was right there the entire time and be was in the Olympics at 19 and a world champ by 21. Mike tyson had one guy that cared about him.

This like Steph being seen as a regular guy when he's a 2nd gen son of a millionaire, in similar situations to Floyd, or Kobe (none of the 3 father's were out and out stars but very solid etc)

I understand exactly what you're saying but we've seen guys with fathers help them achieve their dreams and still let the fame and money corrupt them. Floyd could've still decided to go the opposite way but chose discipline. That's a choice that comes from within and should be applauded and never downplayed!

No marriages, all kids from one woman, no drinking, no smoking, no drugs, etc. That's will power and extreme discipline.

I always believed 80's Mike would've beat 80's Evander. It still would've been a close fight, but 90's Mike was such a diminished fighter compared to Cus' & Rooney trained Mike, even a short time after he made those trainer changes I believe he could've been one of if not the greatest of all time.

It's crazy how timing and circumstances can create diamonds or destruction. It's a shame he chose self-destruction, but when you look at how he came into the life and what he had to go through...life had already beat that man.

So in his prime, maybe he could've been unbeatable under the right circumstances. But obviously that wasn't the case, and the greatness we could've seen we'll sadly never really know.

No marketing.. with cus an rooney he was made to be the beast he was. When cus passed away and rooney kicked to the curb by don king it was all downhill for tyson.. but he was trained so well that it took a while before he started to get fu#ked up and that prison time aint help either. Jus my .02

I love Iron Mike.

Mike was the man, but Mike is the Wilder of his era.

Powerful punches, can knock you out if you get caught slacking, but got knocked down by true boxers of the sport.

Who were those dudes at the time? Only one I can think of is george foreman and ridd1ck bowe, Lennox Lewis and his time don't match up. He eventually got around to fighting both of em. He was gonna fight tommy morrison before Tommy got caught with aids but tyson woulda won that fight. During the time tyson was in his prime he didn't have all those other guys around. Bowe turned pro in 89 and tyson already lost by 1990

Razor ruddock, and frank bruno were underrated people on his resume. Especially razor, also it's more evident by the tough fight they gave him. Tony tucker was 34-0 before tyson. Holmes and Spinks were done by the time tyson fought them, I don't consider those big wins for that time. But those previous 3 were good fighters in their prime. Biggs was a gold medalist but he never panned out but because he was a gold medalist I wouldn't say he was a bum but then he wasn't a big name either. Tyson had the bad luck of being in his prime when Lewis, ruddock and them were just starting out, idk where holyfield was around this time but he was a cruiserweight beforehand and I don't think he made a name for himself by that time. We can hold foreman against him tho (cus was scared to death of him fighting foreman)

He was a force, but definitely had the hype machine behind him. He was essentially the same exact fighter as David Tua, but much more explosive.

say something...
