Theyd rather you protect yourself & let the UCMJ(uniform code of military justice) handle you.
Dead service members cost the govt too much, $400k off top to the family & it goes up from there. Depending on various factors.

We have to abide by military & civilian law. But military law is a there to also protect service members from civilian law bs but they work closely.
Now if the military thinks its a bad look, its over for your ass. They will burn you & let civilian law give you the minimum punishment. While the ucmj is going to sh1t on you.

Long story short, to answer you. Service members can carry off duty & do what they have to do as protection only. But you're right the rule is don't shoot 1st even in combat. After 1 shot from the other side its up if you can justify it.

When I was in the Army if we rolled to a function like a beach party, we would've been in that bi#ch at least 15 deep. That's how it was in Germany when we would go to Winefest and sh1t like that. We were never lacking. We were there to have a good time man. It was never about protection but you knew if some sh1t went down, we all going to jail
