Do gators & Crocs mate ?
Crocodiles and alligators cannot mate, as they are completely different species and not related closely enough to interbreed. While some crocodile species can successfully hybridize with other crocodile species, the offspring is highly likely to be sterile.4 Alligators and crocodiles share a small overlap in their distribution, but they each have access to much different potential prey.3 Studies have reported that a high percentage of female alligators will continuously mate with the same male alligators for life, while young batches of crocodile babies are typical to come from multiple mates.0 Crocodiles and alligators mate almost the same way, by first doing vocalizations, head-slapping, and wrestling for hours.1 Despite their fearsome appearance and reptilian pedigree, crocodiles exhibit surprisingly complex social interactions and a remarkable degree of parental investment in their offspring.2
