Marvel’s first family is getting a rewrite. Josh Friedman, who worked on Avatar: The Way of Water and developed Snowpiercer as a TNT television series, has been tapped to write the script for Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four. Matt Shakman, who was the key director behind Marvel series WandaVision, is on board to helm the feature that has a release date of Feb. 14, 2025, and is set to kick off Phase 6 of its storytelling universe. Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were the previous writers on the project, and Friedman’s hire signals a potential change in tone. Kaplan and Springer are neophyte scribes known for their comedy scripts. Friedman, on the other hand, is a veteran of the sci-fi genre. He co-wrote War of the Worlds, the Steven Spielberg-Tom Cruise update on the H.G. Wells classic, and then acted as the writer-creator of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the Terminator TV series that served as his first foray into the world of James Cameron. Years later, he would return to work on 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate and was one of the writers Cameron turned to for help in world-building and crafting stories for his multi-movie Avatar franchise. The scribe is also the show co-creator of Foundation, the ambitious Apple series adapting the Isaac Asimov stories; the second season is due to debut later this year. And he adapted for the small screen Snowpiercer, TNT’s take on the Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi movie, although he left the show over creative differences.

He didn't say he didn't want Marvel fans. He said he didn't want a writer who loves it so much that they can't be "hard" or critical of the source material.

So, a Marvel fan can definitely be a writer, but they have to come with criticism. He presented the duo as ideal because of them not growing up as Marvel readers, but he made sure to be clear and mention that someone who knows the source material can recognize that one to one translation is not the best version of a film on the Belloni Podcast.

It can go either way.

The 1st Phase of the MCU was a collaborative effort.

- They would bring in TV writers
- Have a film writer add elements
- A comic writer would sprinkle his take on some treatments or even be the basis of the story

It was a whole process that they were given time to do. What I didn't know was that Straczynski's 07/09 run of Thor had elements that Stan Lee already wanted to get off.

He is the one that came up with the idea to have Thor down of Earth of course to humanize him. Didn't know Stan been wanted to execute that.

Guys like Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are the EXACT types that you want for adapting comic book stories to the big screen. Period.

You should've read the script for Deadpool, man. There was so much brilliant stuff that got cut. When the script leaked online I had read literally just about every single Deadpool comic book appearance there was up to that point and I kept saying to myself how there were so many gems in the script that only a seriously talented comic book writer could come up with or someone who truly, really, really, REALLY loves and respects the character.

I'm saying - there are tons of comic writers working on it since Iron Man in 08

1 - You're equating my correction to being in agreement when I never had a stance.
2 - 90% of the MCU films are a mix of TV writing, comic writing, and film treatment.

Perfect example
- The idea of Thor being among humans in the 1st film was Straczynski's idea. He's been writing for DC since the 80s and for Marvel through the 00s.

He wrote for Thor vol 3 and that is why he was brought in to rewrite elements. His idea was to place Thor in Oklahoma in his comic run and he worked over Miller and Stentz (TV writing duo) draft.

Thx for recommending that icon show, as a comic fan I knew a lot of the marvel story but this shed some light on a lot of stuff I didn't know.
