Mar 23 - Utah school district considers Bible ban under new 'sensitive materials' law

The David School District received a petition from a parent to have the Bible removed

A school district in Utah may ban the Holy Bible after a parent complained that it contained "inappropriate and pr0nographic" material forced it to face committee review.

On Dec. 11, the David School District received a petition from a parent to have the Bible removed from schools for being what the parent considered a "s*x-ridden" book. The petition of the parent requesting review of the Bible was made available on Tuesday with the parentís name and address withheld.

"Utah Parents United left off one of the most s*x-ridden books around: The Bible. Youíll no doubt find that the Bible has Ďno serious values for minorsí because itís pr0nographic by our new definition," the petition read.

This complaint followed the passing of Utahís "Sensitive Materials in Schools" law enacted in May which "prohibits certain sensitive instructional materials" if they contain "explicit s*xual arousal, stimulation, masturbation, intercourse, sodomy or fondling." Within the first five months of the law being in place, parents filed over 250 complaints petitioning for certain books to be removed from schools.

The process takes an average of 60 days, though Williams has said that committees are currently facing a backlog of requests from other parents.

So far, 81 books have been reviewed by the districtís committee. The committee removed 33 books while retaining about 30 after review.

According to the districtís website, the parent was required to present 49 pages of the Bibleís text that could be used as evidence for "inappropriate content."

The Davis School District committee is made up of about seven people, including a district administrator, a licensed teacher who is teaching English Language Arts, a librarian and at least four parents who will vote on whether the Bible will remain in schools.

Currently, the school also maintains a policy that "Religious tracts, books, or literature may not be singled out for special regulation or prohibition based on content, but is subject to reasonable time, place and manner restrictions imposed by the schools on other non-school related literature." There has been ongoing debate about whether this policy would affect a potential removal of the Bible from schools.

"Get this pr0n out of our schools," the parent wrote along with an eight-page listing of "offensive" Bible passages. "If the books that have been banned so far are any indication for way lesser offenses, this should be a slam dunk."

I mean, from where I'm sitting, if you're a follower of Christ and you're relying on "the world" (or in this specific instance the school district) to teach your kids about God/Jesus, you already lost. I don't have kids, but I plan on having some in the future and I'm not leaving it to chance for some public educator to teach my kid about the gospel and Jesus. That's on me.

Ridiculous.

I hope the parent that made this complaint slips on a banana peel. Gets a concussion. Spends an eternity in hell for one earthly minute. Then comes back to wake up from her coma.

I believe in separation between church and state, but this is a public school. Just let it be. How much you want to bet that this is loony liberal who's part of the LGBTQ?

You aren't wrong but the argument isn't "who should provide the religious education to the child (if any)" and rather why are we allowing gay books and s*x novels but not a religious bible?

Well no, that's not what's being discussed in this article (though that's obviously a component of the larger conversation). I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't have Bibles in public schools (the same way there shouldn't be quarans in public schools either). I also don't believe that evolution should be taught as facts either, but that's just me.

As far as all that LGBGTQ+ stuff, that obviously has no place in young grade schoolers curriculum. If the kids aren't old enough to have s*x, they're not old enough to learn about s*x (including and especially gay s*x). This seem like it should be obvious.

Jesus [God] isn't a religion, He's the Creator/Ruler of the universe and the Bible isn't about religion either, it's about relationship. Having some public educator who hasn't been reborn by God's Spirit and doesn't care about Christ teach your kids about what their carnal mind believes the words in that book say (without the guidance of the author [Holy Spirit]) isn't going to save my kids soul. It's super personal and God doesn't reveal Himself to anyone until they're genuinely serious about pursuing Him. That's why Jesus said Himself "For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." [Matthew 7:13-14]

Just let it be?

They're already banning books that contain less explicit material than the bible.

Kids don't need to be reading a book containing graphic scenes of s*x and violence, right?

No. Read the article. The books you're complaining about have already been reported/banned.

The argument is: Why are we banning books that have less explicit content than the Bible but not the Bible itself?

The parents are just as lost as the followers of the ones who want to have it at school. Taking a scientific book and using it literally to spread lies about a white dude in the sky. Congnetive dissonance is strong amongst these folks.

Because it's not facts, it's a pseudo scientific theory from a dude with no working knowledge of microbiology (who I might add was instrumental in popularizing white supremacy with his not-so-well-publicized follow-up book 'The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to s*x '). Again, the only reason why you believe it's a "fact" is because that's what you were told your whole life. While genetic mutations themselves are an incontrovertible reality, the idea of "genetic mutations producing new information" is not and its pretty easily disproven with basic logic. This is just one video of many, but it's short so I figured it would be a good general demonstration of what I'm talking about.

Yeah, a guy on YouTube knows the truth and the entirety of the field of biology and genetics is false.

Got it.

For the record, Darwin is outdated. So you can diss him all you want, it literally does nothing to counter the modern theory of evolution.

All you did is prove that you suffer from confirmation bias and will continue to believe in false arguments as long as you can prop up your religious beliefs.
