Mission: Impossible 8 Blocked From Filming In Arctic Location By Local Government

"According to a new report, one protected Arctic location has been ruled off-limits for the ongoing Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two production. After the franchise first got its start back in 1996, the story of Tom Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt is seemingly coming to an end with two final installments. Although Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is still months away from hitting theaters, work has been ongoing on the eighth and final entry for some time.

Now, a new report from The Guardian claims that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two's filming has encountered a bit of a setback. The production was reportedly aiming to film at various locations on Svalbard, a protected archipelago between Norway and the North Pole, but local Norwegian authorities denied requests for a planned 40 helicopter landings due to concerns regarding disruptions to local wildlife. While the production was denied permission to film in a number of spots on the archipelago, limited filming in Svalbard in permitted locations is reported to have occurred.

Dead Reckoning Part Two Filming Locations Explained

While many details remain unknown regarding Mission: Impossible 8, the film is already shaping up to be quite the globe-trotting adventure. Like several of the most recent installments, some filming on the upcoming action movie did occur in the U.K. Cruise was spotted last year filming Mission: Impossible 8's paragliding sequences in the Lake District, but it's not clear how extensive a role the location will play in the movie.

More recently, however, director Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise, and the rest of the production were spotted in Italy. Specifically, the Mission: Impossible 8 cast and crew filmed scenes on an aircraft carrier in the Aegean Sea. Although little is known about these scenes, McQuarrie posted several pictures to his Instagram providing a brief glimpse at the aircraft carrier where filming took place and a first look at a new character played by Hannah Waddingham who seemingly plays a role in this sequence.

With the Mission: Impossible 8 production denied access to film in certain locations on Svalbard, it's unclear where the production will go next. It's also not clear if the material they did manage to film on the archipelago will still be used or if the entire sequence will be reshot elsewhere. Many questions remain regarding Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, but the movie is certainly shaping up to be, at the very least, a picturesque conclusion to Hunt's story."
