Dell Harris wanted to bring Kobe along slowly, feeling a HS kid needed to learn from the bench. Kobe AND T-Mac had to prove perimeter players could make the leap, and those high school to the NBA cats in later years benefited from that. By the time Lebron came around, it was a forgone conclusion that perimeter players could make the transition.
