Spokane has a medium risk, but it's getting close to low risk. Crime is very focused on certain areas, but those areas are more likely to be where tourists are. Crime rates have been decreasing since 2018, but they're still well above the national average in the most critical categories. Spokane's safety is really dependent on how used you are to a busy downtown area with its fair share of crime.
A Spokesman-Review analysis of racial breakdowns in arrests found in June that about 12% of arrests made over a five-year period were of Black suspects, while the city’s population is about 3% Black. Those rates also showed Black Spokanites were about five times more likely to be arrested than white Spokanites.
Well, for those who are in the crime conversation, every city has crime. The more violent crime usually occurs in low-income areas. Low-income regardless of racial demographics. If there's a low-income apartment with majority black people, the crime map is going to be hot in that area. If there's a low-income apartment with majority white people, the crime map is going to be hot in that area. Poverty and crime seem to go hand in hand. The same goes for rural towns. If there is a majority white town, there's going to be crime where the income is lower, whether it is low-income apartment complex or trailer park.
The media is going to paint the picture that they want the general public to see. If they just reported on lesbian crimes and car accidents on the TV news and newspapers, you would start making assumptions that lesbians are criminals and bad drivers.
Didn't know that about #9. I have black family members that live in the Fort so that was surprising to see it on the list. #5 sounds right as it's a small college town.
