"The unstoppable hitman John Wick will face something of an existential crisis when it comes to his fourth chapter. After k*lling so, so many people, Wick (played once again by Keanu Reeves) will begin to wonder why he cannot stop his quest for revenge, what his beloved wife would think of him now, and what will he do once everyone is dead?
"With 4, you get to this place of asking an existential question of John. When you find him, there's been a little bit of a time break between 3 and 4. He's full of rage. He wants revenge on the High Table for the things that happened in the third movie. But the questions that everyone around him is asking are: 'Literally why are you still doing this? What is the value of your life, even if you get out?' And would his wife value the man that he's become in going down this gauntlet of revenge? You get to really examine John's soul, and make him confront this idea of who he is, and what he's f*ghting for."
John Wick: Chapter 4 co-writer Shay Hatten reveals to Total Film that the upcoming sequel will do more to explore the soul of the a*sassin, who has now spent three movies doing little else other than k*lling people who get in his way. As well as digging deeper into what makes John Wick tick, Hatten also reveals that there will be a time-jump between chapters 3 and 4, allowing the people around him to question why he continues to add to the already mountainous pile of bodies that he has left in his wake.
John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski previously revealed that the story would see the hitman look within. But promised that the self-help would not slow him down. "In John Wick 4, I would say, John comes to terms with how what he does affects people that he cares about,” the filmmaker explained. “There's always got to be consequences for your actions. And in this, we're starting to see that John understands what the consequences are. Not that it curbs him in any way."
There Will Be No Happy Ending for John Wick
Sadly, all the existential questioning in the world cannot help Wick now, according to director Chad Stahelski, who sees no happy ending for the dog-loving a*sassin. "Honestly, I challenge you right now, here's a question to you: How do you f---ing want me to end it?" he asked. "Do you think he's going to ride off into the f---ing sunset? He's k*lled 300 f---ing people and he's just going to [walk away], everything's okay? He's just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you're this f---ing guy, if this guy really exist[ed], how is this guy's day going to end? He's f---ed for the rest of his life. It's just a matter of time."
John Wick: Chapter 4 finds the titular hitman once again on a quest for both survival and revenge after uncovering a path to defeating the High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. Directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, John Wick: Chapter 4 stars Keanu Reeves as John Wick alongside Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Donnie Yen, Lance Redd*ck, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, Ian McShane, Clancy Brown, Marko Zaror, and Natalia Tena.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2023."
