Regulation means less volatility, smaller returns and more sideways action. Think of stocks or 7% gains in a year.

Long gone are the days of using bitcoin as a means of hiding wealth from governments. But the tradeoff is the opportunity for crypto as a whole to revolutionize the financial industry on a major scale.

But you need societal adoption to give it value. When it became legal tender in certain aspects it legitimized it. But to be able to adopt it as legal tender on a large scale, regulation is mandatory. Uncle Sam is always going to get his cut no matter what. Personally I'd rather have it regulated, make it easier to pay taxes and legitimately use it as a means of building wealth.
