After watching Shang chi, they could do it. Hardest parts of DBZ are 2 things: making super Saipan not look idiotic and the hair styles. Also anime dialogue is pretty cringeyat least in English. All that charging up for 5 hours, villains announcing their master plan on some goofy I fooled you, this ain’t even my final form yet would be terrible on screen and lastly characters shouting names for the attacks could either go really well or really bad. That’s a trademark of DBZ but could end up very very goofy

Before MCU got started people a*sumed that the movies were going to be bad because of how ridiculous and over-the-top the comic books were.

We just need the right people to do DBZ justice. I personally think they can pull it off.
Who thought that?

Sounds like complete cap. Comic book movies have always been blockbusters since they first started

DB evolution was trash but Disney had no hand in that I wouldn’t mind seeing this universe.

it's not a horrible decision business-wise.

dragonball z is a pretty big intellectual property with a global multi-generational fanbase. most likely the 1st anime that the majority of black people really started fu*king with.

you have the built in fanbase...make the rating acceptable for kids/families for the maximum audience size...some stars who draw crowds...that asian international market appeal...and that disney promotional machine behind it? could easily be a hit.

I thought Fox let them lapse. If not, then they do.
That's what I thought. But then Super Hero just had Toei Animation and Crunchyroll (Sony Pictures) handle distribution. The best-selling Dragon Ball movie to date, and Disney backed away from Super Hero.

None of the animated stuff are on the Disney+ servers anyway. Just the live-action movie.

If Disney does have the rights, I don't think they will move forward and invest that money without also owning animation rights. Disney would sh*t themselves if they make no bread on full blown animated DB movies coming out left and right because the live action made it even more popular. I think the would have to buy the Toei because that is the only way they can get full DB rights.

Disney does own a part of the rights tho.
Apparently not anymore. I specifically stayed til the end of Super Hero to see if they were part of the production committee and they're not, so rights may have lapsed...

Please god no. As much as I want a good live action DBZ franchise, I do not want Disney be at the helm.

When the Disney-Fox merger was completed in 2019, Disney obtained all the a*sets previously owned by Fox. Among other, Disney also obtained the rights to a small portion of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise – Dragon Ball Z, but only in terms of making and distributing live-action movies.

Again, the rights may have lapsed. They (as Fox International) have been involved as a producer in every animated feature from BOG to Broly. They were NOT credited at all in Super Hero in any capacity (as either 20th Century Pictures or Disney).

Feel free to go roll the credits to all 4 movies to confirm this.

I literally used to decipher production committees for fun

Let me try to put it another way. Why would they be a producer for the animated movies from 2013 and onward (until recently) if they just had the rights to produce live action?

Of course we don't know the particulars of the initial contract between Fox, Shueisha and Toei, but the way everything played out it seems as if they got a piece of anything DB that was made for theaters (again up until a certain point).

I'm not saying anything is absolute at all (outside of Fox being involved from BOG to Broly, that info is bonafide FACTS), these are just educated guesses based on what's been going on on the corporate side of things.

It's possible they renegotiated terms to be strictly live action, but we don't know. All I know is they weren't part of the last movie, so it's a possibility that the rights have lapsed.

That's it.

I believe that's the case. Long ago Ghost in the shell rights was at Disney. I remember that because I viewed the actual Japanese theatrical film print of "Innocence", and Disney was part of the production committee. Then somehow Paramount Pictures made the movie (2017- Live Action). So either rights lapsed or Disney made a deal with Paramount and exchanged for Marvel rights or something.
