Training Day: Washington Says Film Different Before Fuqua's Changes

image

"The 2001 crime drama Training Day represented a watershed moment in Denzel Washington's career, garnering him his second Academy Award, his first as Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film also earned co-star Ethan Hawke a Best Supporting Actor nomination. According to Washington, it was very different as it was originally scripted as a Lethal Weapon-type of film.

"I don't think it was written for a Black guy," Washington told The Hollywood Reporter on the profile about director Antoine Fuqua. "It was more like a plaid-shirt [wearing] guy with beer bottles in the back." The actor credited Fuqua for making it the way it turned out to be. "Antoine was the one that brought gangster to it."

Fuqua was inspired watching gangster films growing up when making the 2001 film. "I was excited to put the camera on him," he remembered. "On [Denzel's] very first scene, I remember covering Denzel and I got everything I wanted as a director. I felt good about it. But I'm this young guy and a little nervous. I don't want to screw this up. So I turned to Denzel and said, 'You want to come to the monitor to take a look to see if you're happy?' And Denzel turned to me and said, 'Man, you're flying this plane. Call me when you're ready,' and then got up and walked away. Then I looked at Ethan and he gave me a look like, 'Yep,' and he walked away. It was a confirmation that they trusted me. It empowered me to really go for it."

Written by David Ayer, the film follows a rookie cop (Hawke) who spends his first day as a Los Angeles narcotics officer with a rogue detective (Washington), who isn't what he appears to be. Fuqua has several projects, including Amazon Prime Video's The Terminal List and the Hulu docu-series Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers. For more on his career, including his rise and his latest projects, you can check out the piece at THR."

Amazing performance by Denzel. I didn't understand it at first. That Oscar has nothing to do with the type of character he is playing. The material is a beast.

One of his best films. Like I always say, When Denzel plays the bad guy or some type of vigilante hero, those are pretty much his best works. Training Day, Equalizer, The Magnificent Seven, many more.

I feel like Street Kings was a semi-spiritual successor to Training Day. If Zo didn't get k*lled, would he have ended up running stuff like Cpt.Jack (Forest Whitaker) and would Jake say "fu*k it" and go to the dark side like Det.Ludlow (Keanu Reeves).

I'm not comparing the two in the standard of quality, just in tonality of the story.

That "new" trailer gives away way too much of the story. And that's the problem with a lot of these new movie trailers. I go into it already knowing the whole fu*king story.

Fuqua either makes bangers or trash.

Brooklyns finest was a hot piece of garbage. The rest of his sh*t is watchable, but training day was dope as fu*k. Same with the equalizer films. I think it’s clear when he’s got Denzel it’s gonna be a hit. Not sure if it’s the Denzel effect or if he just picks the ones he knows are gonna be good.

Watching Training Day in the movie theater was an experience like no other..... Bruh everyone was super focused on the entire movie the entire time! I watched it with my cousins in DC where usually nxggas be talking during the movie..... Mfers was only reacting or silent the whole time.

That scene with Jake in the house with the Mexicans and the 'monologue' near the end by Denzel was some powerful reality! The fake warrant drew the biggest reaction though because it was the first time people could say "this is the shxt I was talking about" in regards to corrupt cops on screen doing what they do since Do The Right Thing.

Fuqua & F. Gary Gray took the mantle from Spike Lee & John Singleton then made classics.

Denzel's confidence gave Fuqua a fresh vision & touch...that encouragement of doing something to please Denzel is why this movie is a classic. Denzel is the sparkplug of greatness
