A soccer team in the UK (Everton) have just started selling NFTs.

They advertise it by saying you can 'wear your digital shirt' but they neglect to say how that is remotely possible.

sh*t is a scam, always has been. I have yet to see a single good use for this technology that isn't just Ponzi scheme bullsh*t.

There are actually some interesting practical uses for NFTs as far as digital rights goes. Blockchain technology has been overshadowed by the money making scams which is sad, because the tech itself is really interesting, albeit imperfect.

When it comes to visual arts/collectibles they’re completely useless though lol

But for other mediums, such as music/video there are some interesting applications.

There needs to be actual rights attached to the token in order to make it useful, otherwise it’s literally just owning an icon/collectible in a fledgling and fickle collector’s community that could implode at any second (which we’re seeing right now lol)

“Stoner Cats” (I think that’s what it was called) was one interesting application (not as ying the show itself should be successful, but the rights conferred upon purchasing an NFT were really interesting). They’re also valuable for content creators as a way to tamp down on piracy and cut out middle men who take their money. So it’s a good distribution tool in that sense.

Sadly, all of this has been overshadowed by the stupid scams that NFTs have been used for which strictly involve the graphic arts/digital collectibles and is currently imploding lol

But yeah there’s definitely some practical uses for NFTs, you just have to actually understand how they work (and a little bit of fundamental property law theory)

That's exactly why. People don't want to give game companies any more reason to jack up the price of DLC/digital content.

Realistically there isn't much that NFT infrastructure could do in the gaming space that isn't already being done with conventional methods.

They could be used by indie devs to fund projects, but honestly that would probably just overcomplicate the entire thing.

Really all NFTs would do is (ironically enough) create a centralized secondary market for digital content which would probably wind up driving up the average price of digital content offered by studios.

If it makes it east for me to trade digital items then I want it I don't pay for skins but if I get a rare skin I'd love for it to have value that can be traded.

This is possible and is being done right now, without NFTs.

It’s a double edged sword honestly little implementations are cool but it’s only a matter of time before one company becomes successful then other companies follow suit. Gamers are already getting entice to buy Microtransactions in games now they are basically double dipping but Sony practices that a lot with their delayed $70 PC releases.

very little for those who use Steam, but a lot more for console users, which I think this thread is primarily focused on.

I'm not really arguing that they'd be useful, just explaining what little utility they would have since a lot of folks hear "NFT" or "blockchain" and immeidately think of the various ponzi schemes that are conducted with this technology and not the technology itself.

There's probably some more interesting applications that I'm not clever enough to come up with that go beyond digital currency/item ownership. Probably something that'd be more akin to a season pass, but again, we already have season passes lol so I'm not sure what use it would have.

Non of these a**holes where forced to spend on my player characters, the gamers are at fault for spending on play 2 win games.

Issue is gaming companies are already incentivized to make money off of microtransactions so lets make things easier

You right but Microtransactions didn’t hit like this 10 years ago. I know Giesha impact made millions.. I wouldn’t want to buy a game with most of the game modes hidden behind having a certain NFT.

This isn't PS Stars related(although it points to the fact Sony is messing around with NFTs).
