Prey Movie Director Breaks Down New Predator Skull Mask Choice

Prey director Dan Trachtenberg recently broke down the new skull mask choice for the latest version of the Predator. Set in 1719, the upcoming Predator prequel will focus on Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young Comanche hunter who comes face-to-face with an unseen, ruthless alien while on a hunting ritual. Armed with only her hunting bow, a small ax, and her prowess, Naru takes it upon herself to track and k*ll the Predator before it wipes out her people. Joining Midthunder are Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and 6'9" former professional basketball player Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.

Due to the fact that Prey is a prequel of the long-running science-fiction horror franchise, Trachtenberg previously revealed that the iconic Predator's design has been changed from previous editions. The alien hunter's weapons have been either adjusted or removed to showcase a less technologically advanced version of the Predator. This can be seen with the removal of the Predator's distinctive plasma caster, a shoulder-mounted weapon prominently used throughout the film series. In previous films, the villain also sported a metallic mask/helmet that protected the alien's head and mandibles. However, Prey features a newly-styled version of the Predator, now with a skull mask.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Trachtenberg broke down his choice for giving the Predator a skull mask. The director explained that changing the mask to a skull was one of the very first ideas the filmmakers had for the character's redesign. According to Trachtenberg, this was to create a more terrifying and "ferocious" appeal unseen in previous editions of the creature. The lore-based reasoning behind the change stems from the Predator's nature as a trophy hunter. Instead of just hanging trophies on their belt or bringing it back to their ship, as seen in Predator 2, the alien can also wear what they k*ll. Read what Trachtenberg said about the design below.

You mentioned the skull mask... That was one of the earliest ideas. We wanted to suggest that our creature was much more ferocious. It's a little bit stripped down, but still embraces the code that we know a Predator to hunt by – it's a trophy hunter. We just thought, "Wouldn't be cool if it wears its trophy on its face rather than just on its hip?" I think we happened upon something very exciting, though, and that's that we kept the mandibles exposed, which are so iconically Predator, and it allowed us to still be engaged with the emotionality of the Predator even while it was masked, which is something that the other films never got a chance to do. So, yeah, I loved designing this creature.

One key aspect of the new Predator redesign is the fact that the alien's lower mandibles are exposed. According to the director, this allows for a greater emotional dynamic previously unseen in a Predator film. Generally, the monster's face is hidden behind the mask until a dramatic reveal later in the story. The heroes of each Predator entry primarily face off against a stoic metal helmet for much of the movie, before finally catching a glimpse of what they are truly up against when the mask is removed. The change to the mask allows Trachtenberg to give a level of animalism that no other Predator had a chance to portray.

The use of an actual skull also more aligns itself with the setting of the Predator prequel. With the film set in the American Great Plains of the early 18th century, the more grounded and naturalistic aesthetic of the Predator blends in with Prey's hunting narrative. As Naru goes on a ritual hunt, the skull she must face closely matches her challenges and goals to prove herself to the tribe. Audiences can finally get a clear look at the Predator's new haunting skull mask when Prey lands on Hulu August 5."

Big fan of the mask, very primitive which fits the time in which the movie takes place.

Nah it’s super solid. Not forced, well written, accurate, adds mythos without it being fan service. Probably the best Predator flick next to the OG

I thought it was a very good movie given the budget. All of the Comanches did their damn thang as warriors. None were cowards. I liked the Predator learning about the food chain and taking realistic damage starting from the bear to the very end. It made sense for his mask to be a skull that had technology fused with it. Shows that they adapted and improved as time progressed. The cannon starting out as a dart gun was cool as well. I liked the flick and was entertained from beginning to end. Definitely #2 after the original Predator. IMHO

Movie was dope.as fu*k. The minute we go to the bear scene, I knew sh*t was gonna get real. I love ethat they brought I. The white frontier men too. I didn't just want to see Predator fu*king up the Comanche. My favorite aspect about this movie, is that it's more of a horror movie, then a straight up sci-fi action film. This n*gga was a demon.

Hell naw we had two and both were a*s. Only the unrated version of the first one was decent imo. This movie Prey is fire. Most k*ll scenes in any predator flick. Best sequel imo.
