Watching the first movie does make the emotional beats hit harder, but this new one tells you everything you need to know. Top Gun 1 aint a necessary watch to understand what's going on.

All action/flight related scenes were great on IMAX

Maverick/Rooster drama was good and it made sense

Mav love story was 100% unnecessary, slowed the pacing down

US special operations against an unknown enemy combatant, in an unknown region was goofy. Movie just US military propaganda.

There is no antagonist, like the original. No dramatic tension in that sense at all. It's just a light workplace drama with planes and everyone is friends at the end because, well, they have to be.

Story was very straightforward and simple but that isn't a bad thing. Writers used Mission Impossible thing where Tom explains the mission and how improbable it is via cut scenes and holographics to his team. Technique works well.

Rating: 6/10. Training + mission scenes worth the price of admission alone

I only watched top gun 1 last night... And I'm 40 years old. Don't hate me but I didn't think it was all that.

Going to see the new one with the broad next week tho.
