May 13 - Elon Musk tweets that his $44B deal to buy Twitter “temporarily on hold”

Elon Musk said Friday that his plan to buy Twitter for $44 billion is “temporarily on hold” as he tries to pinpoint the exact number of spam and fake accounts on the social media platform, another twist amid signs of internal turmoil over the proposed acquisition.

Musk, who has been vocal about his desire to clean up Twitter’s problem with “spam bots” that mimic real people, appeared to question whether the company was underreporting them.

In a tweet, the Tesla billionaire linked to a Reuters story from May 2 about a quarterly report from Twitter that estimated false or spam accounts made up fewer than 5% of the company’s “monetizable daily active users” in the first quarter.

“Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users,” Musk said, indicating he’s skeptical that the number of inauthentic accounts is that low.

somebody's eyes were bigger than their stomach

Sara Silver, a professor of business journalism and financial communication at Quinnipiac University, said it appears Musk is using the number of spam accounts as a pretext to pull out of the deal.

“To claim that this is the reason that he’s putting the deal on pause, it’s not credible,” Silver said. “This is not a new issue for him. It’s not just entering his consciousness now.”

Stock in both Twitter and Tesla swung sharply in opposite directions Friday, with Twitter’s stock falling more than 9% and shares of Tesla, which Musk had proposed using to help fund the Twitter deal, falling nearly 6%.

But shares of Tesla, which Musk has been selling to fund some of the acquisition of Twitter, have tumbled since it was revealed the social platform had become a Musk target.

Those shares have lost a quarter of their value in the last month, and have fallen from about $1,150 in early April when Musk confirmed he had taken a huge stake in Twitter, to about $762 Friday.

“So it’s become much more expensive for him to buy this company using his Tesla shares,” Silver said.
Tesla shares may have benefitted from Twitter bot accounts over the years as well. A University of Maryland researcher recently concluded that such bots have been used to generate hundreds of thousands of positive tweets about Tesla, potentially buoying its stock in years when it was under pressure.

Neither Tesla nor its supporters has taken responsibility for those bots.

Investors a*sessing the deal have had to weigh Musk’s legal troubles as the possibility that acquiring Twitter could be a distraction from running the world’s most valuable automaker. The proposed deal continued to pressure shares of Tesla, which had already fallen 16% this week.

Sounds like the whole thing was a PR stunt. He could have easily got that data before bidding.

Especially since he's publicly stated from the start he wanted to remove the bots.

Kind of an odd time to decide you want to confirm the number of bots on the website you want to spend 40 billion on

My thing is, he swept up so many internet "investors" and got them to buy Tesla stock, they might not even need to push the button.

You just need a legion of nerds that don't want their holdings to tank with the tech capabilities to pump their own holdings. Especially as fanatical as they are about Musk.

yea it’d be mighty funny if that army of spam accounts that automatically and immediately jump into your mentions to defend Elon’s every business move and track his bowel movements weren’t actually real people and bots he deployed to maintain his online PR. It. Would. Be. Hilarious.

Maybe to his net worth, but he had to rope in additional investors to complete his package. He didn't just open a couple apps on his phone and come up with 43 billion which is why I think it's a really odd time to ask a crucial question about one of your main reasons for buying in the first place.

oh yeah, his rationale is def bullsh*t. this isn't some new thing he just learned about. he's stalling or reneging or manipulating markets or all of the above.

I literally said in plenty of them threads when all this stuff first started occurring that the goal was the data, never about "Speech"...He's literally making more money while the deal is supposedly in jeopardy/on hold than off the news of it going through

More finesse from the corporate masters and the big tech that MAGA claims to hate

Note: @ this thread deserves one of those 'regime' rewrites for its topic only @ can deliver

Aka the investors started questioning the numbers after looking at the internet react to fake news. Like I said in the last thread on this topic.

Y’all think he’s putting up 42 billion because you don’t read past headlines.
