NO I.D. Sells His Production Catalog

Hipgnosis is buying up every artist in the industry's catalog. Here's the owners of Hipgnosis
image
Hipgnosis Songs has acquired the entire music royalty catalog of frequent Kanye West and Jay-Z collaborator Ernest "Dion" Wilson, better known as No I.D. Considered the "Godfather of Chicago Hip-Hop," No I.D.’s songs and productions over the years have been streamed more than 7 billion times and include such hits as "Run This Town" by Jay-Z featuring West and Rihanna; "Holy Grail" by Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake; West’s "Black Skinhead"; and "Kiss Me" by Ed Sheeran, among many others.

Technically, Hipgnosis has acquired 100% of No I.D.’s worldwide copyrights and publishing royalties — including writer’s share of income — in the 273-song catalog. No I.D. rose to fame in 1994 with his production work on Common’s critically acclaimed sophomore album Resurrection. He began his partnership with Jay-Z with 2007’s American Gangster album and subsequently worked on major releases like The Blueprint 3, Magna Carta Holy Grail and 4:44. He started working with West in 2008 on the seminal 808s & Heartbreak, and the collaboration continued with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus. He has also worked with Drake, Big Sean and Nas.

"The words NO I.D. are a stamp of excellence on any album," said Merck Mercuriadis, founder of Hipgnosis Songs. "From Kanye West’s '808s & Heartbreak’, 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ and 'Yeezus’ to Jay-Z’s astonishing run from 'American Gangster’ through 'The Blueprint 3’, 'Magna Carta Holy Grail’ and '4:44’, Dion has been in the middle of everything that is great about Hip Hop for more than two decades. He is a special creator and everyone in the Hipgnosis Family is proud to have him standing next to us."

No I.D. added, "Not many have the best intentions for the artist and the creators. Merck and the Hipgnosis team have shown that they are a safe home for the songs that score our lives."

Jimmy Iovine sold his catolag. So the same responses he got should be same responses for No I.D. right?

Replies in thread "Jimmy Iovine Sells His Entire Production Catalog".

The point of most business ventures is to build it then sell it, so I don’t see why music would be any different
 Schavez98 said
I’ll bet he got a cool half a billy or something. Iovine in the 80’s was working.

Smart move.. They'll own majority of the major catalogs soon & will able to set the price for streaming services to use their music
 Hitek said
They're selling because they were offered a sh*t ton of money for it. The money he got in 1 payday would probably have taken 50+ years to make from royalties.

He sold at the right time… u can’t take it with you
 Bandito said
I think that's why you have groups like Hipgnosis acquiring all these songs. Once your catalog gets big enough you have better leverage negotiating royalties from streaming services.

Hipgnosis is owned by a black man.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund is a British Guernsey-registered music IP investment and song management company founded by Merck Mercuriadis and Nile Rodgers in 2018.

Now that you know that Hipgnosis is owned by a black man can you edit your post and say "Black man wins again"?

How much does the music industry make a year?

Data on recorded music industry revenue in the United States from 2009 to 2020 shows steady growth from 2015 onwards. The revenue reached 8 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, up by 7.5 percent from the 7.4 billion reported in the previous year.

Music makes more than Baseball
The outlet estimated the average MLB salary was $3.7 million for the 2021 season

Someone had referenced Royalty Exchange in a thread two years ago.

I slacked off trying to fu*k with them at the time but w/ the right moves, right money, right type of leverage and right people, any of us coulda been these Hipgnosis people.

It might sound wild and color me crazy or w/e but some serious ish coulda been done in regards to laymen especially since they were giving out PPP, PUA, OPP, etc. type of money out there.
