Jan 26 - Federal trial for three ex-officers charged in George Floyd's k*lling begins

The three former police officers who helped Derek Chauvin restrain George Floyd on a Minneapolis street in May 2020 are set to stand trial in a federal courtroom today for violating his civil rights.

Opening statements are set for 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. local).

Here are key things to know:

The charges: J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao are charged with deprivation of rights under color of law for allegedly failing to give Floyd medical aid on May 25, 2020, the indictment states. Thao and Kueng are also charged with failing to intervene in Chauvin's use of unreasonable force as he kneeled on Floyd's neck and back for over nine minutes.

Kueng, Lane and Thao have pleaded not guilty to the federal charges, while Chauvin admitted guilt in December as part of a plea deal. Chauvin was also convicted last year on Minnesota state charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The jury: A jury of five men and seven women was selected for the case on Thursday in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota.

How we got here: The trial comes about 20 months after Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was handcuffed and pressed to the pavement on his stomach. Harrowing video taken by a bystander shows Floyd as he gasped for air, pleaded with the officers, "I can't breathe," and called for his mother.

The officers called for medical services but did not render aid to Floyd, who fell unconscious and stopped breathing. He remained in the same position until paramedics arrived and lifted his limp body into an ambulance, and he was declared dead later that night.

The video of his final moments sparked widespread protests and fiery unrest in a societal movement against police brutality and racial injustice. Less than two years later, the k*lling remains particularly difficult for Floyd's family to continue reliving.

"This trial will be another painful experience for the Floyd family, who must once more relive his grueling death in excruciating detail," Floyd family attorneys Ben Crump, Antonio Romanucci and Jeff Storms said in a statement. "On behalf of the legal team and the family, we trust and expect that an impartial jury representative of the community will be seated to do this important work."

The federal case is separate from the state charges for Floyd's death. Kueng, Lane and Thao have pleaded not guilty to state charges of aiding and abetting, and that trial is tentatively set for June.

When Derrick Chauvin got sentenced to 22.5 years for k*lling George Floyd there was a bunch of people talking about "Bu bu but what about the other 3 cops? Why are y'all celebrating? This is not a win/victory until they get the other 3 cops that sat there and watch Derrick Chauvin k*ll George Floyd and didn't stop him. Those cops were accomplices to Derrick Chauvin and it won't be victory until they're convicted and sentenced".

Where are those people at? This trial started 2 days ago and there hasn't been one thread about it. People are trying to keep this trial quiet because they're hoping these 3 are found not guilty and then if they're found not guilty that's when they are gonna make threads celebrating talking about "The other 3 cops in George Floyd's murder found not guilty". But if they were all 3 convicted there was gonna be no threads about it at all. They wanted to stay under the radar

Which one? The black one? If he did then let him go free. Lock the white dude and the asian dude up with Derrick Chauvin.

And was you saying this in those threads back when people was talking about "Bu bu but what about the other 3 cops?"?

Depends on what he is charged with, if it's felony murder(accomplice liability) there's a withdrawal clause in the law, if he tells the culprit to stop what he's doing and culprit refuses then that is used as withdrawal and thousands of people win these type of cases each year....

Yes, you can convict him of that...but that's not going to get him substantial time

Though I think they'll all go down, the Asian dude can argue he wasn't even paying attention to what Chauvin was doing as he was distracted by the on lookers and the younger guy can fall back on his training simply stating that he was trained to follow the lead of senior officers.

Yes, that cop should walk...he clearly was trying to tell them to do the right thing but was just overruled by his superiors

Nope put all 3 of them in prison. None of them stopped Chauvin so they're all accessories to the crime.

When Chauvin got convicted and everybody was happy and celebrating there was a bunch of people talking about "Bu bu but what about the other 3 cops? I'm not celebrating until all 4 of them are convicted and this won't be a win or victory until those other 3 cops are convicted too".

Now it's time for those 3 cops to be convicted now all of a sudden everybody wanna claim "Well I think just the black cop should be convicted but I think they should let the white cop and the asian cop go because they're innocent. But lock the black cop up. And I'm black by the way so don't say I'm racist because I want the black cop locked up and I want the white cop and asian cop to go free".

Well since y'all saying lock up the black cop and let the white and asian cops go free. I say lock up the white and asian cop and let the black cop go free. Give the white cop and asian cop both 22.5 years just like Chauvin got. Set a precedent for non black cops and put their a*ses away in prison for 20+ years. fu*k em
