A man at death’s door has been denied a spot on the heart transplant list because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
DJ Ferguson, 31, has steadfastly refused the shot on principle, his father, David Ferguson, told WBZ-TV in Boston, where the patient is at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“My son has gone to the edge of death to stick to his guns, and he’s been pushed to the limit,” Ferguson told the station. “It’s kind of against his basic principles, he doesn’t believe in it. It’s a policy they are enforcing and so because he won’t get the shot, they took him off the list of a heart transplant.”
DJ Ferguson, according to an online fund-raising page set up by a family friend, suffers from a “hereditary heart issue” that caused his lungs to fill with blood and fluid late last year.

Medical experts say it’s not a matter of principle, but of survival. A transplant patient must take immune-suppression medications to prevent organ rejection, which makes them more vulnerable to infection, and COVID is no exception.
“It’s not just about this procedure,” John Carney, CEO of the Center for Practical Bioethics, a think tank that studies and promotes ethical discourse and action in health care, told the Daily News, noting the aftermath of the surgery that also factors in.

“Post any transplant, kidney, heart whatever, your immune system is shut off,” Dr. Arthur Caplan, head of medical ethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, told WBZ. “The flu could k*ll you, a cold could k*ll you, COVID could k*ll you. The organs are scarce, we are not going to distribute them to someone who has a poor chance of living when others who are vaccinated have a better chance post-surgery of surviving.”
The hospital said its policy is in line with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for vaccines necessary before transplant.

“Given the shortage of available organs, we do everything we can to ensure that a patient who receives a transplanted organ has the greatest chance of survival,” the hospital told The News in a statement. “Research has shown that transplant recipients are at a much higher risk of dying from COVID-19 when compared to non-transplant patients. This guidance is in alignment with recommendations from the American Society of Transplantation, American Society of Transplant Surgeons and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.”

So they want him to take the vax to be eligible for this life saving surgery, what if he gets fully vaccinated and now there’s complications from and/or it k*lls him then what?? What if he don’t even make it past the first shot? So either way ol boy is possibly fu*ked?? Cause last I checked the vax doesn’t prevent covid just supposedly better protects you if you get it. But if they gotta turn off your immune system completely to make sure the new organ doesn’t reject, he’ll still get severely ill and or die if he catches covid. The likelihood that an adverse reaction would occur are far lower than the likelihood of death/heart damage from not receiving a transplant or contracting Covid due to the immunocompromization caused after receiving a transplant.

At the end of the day it’s his body, his choice, he thinks he’s better off with a bad heart he doesn’t have to get the vaccine. But you ain’t gonna give a new liver to somebody who refuses to quit drinking, the same way you ain’t gonna give a heart to somebody who refuses to quit smoking.

If you refuse to protect the organ they intend to give you, they have every right to give it to somebody who will.
