Using wiretaps, agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Cleveland tracked the movements and phone calls of Mahoney, 43, of North Royalton, and the others. On Dec. 14, authorities listened to Mahoney speak with a Mexican-based supplier about the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in drugs from his home.

“I don’t even know what to say or how to start, but over the weekend, Saturday, my house was broken into, and they stole my safe,” Mahoney said, according to the court filings.

“They stole your what?” the unidentified person said.

“They stole my safe,” Mahoney said, according to a transcript of the call. “The safe had 30, 35 books in there.”

[ DEA affidavit filed in federal court indicated that Mahoney was referring to 35 kilograms of cocaine when he discussed the loss of books. Mahoney claimed the safe also contained about $100,000 in cash, which was also stolen, the affidavit shows.


“I’m sick right now,” Mahoney said later during the same call, according to the transcript. “I don’t even know what to say or do right now. It just, I can’t believe it.”


Mahoney feared he was as much as $600,000 to $700,000 short, despite being able to pay $2 million, according to the document. It indicates the 35 kilograms lost were part of 100 kilograms sent to Mahoney.

“Ok, so, so, gotta let me know, so, so, so 35 percent you lost, right?” the unidentified person said.

“Yeah, I lost 35,” Mahoney answered, according to the document.]

[Authorities also found hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. They also seized a ledger, which indicates Mahoney “owes several million dollars for previously acquired cocaine,” according to the affidavit.]
