Long before Russell Westbrook was benched down the stretch of Wednesday's 111-104 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel was given a*surances that the organization would support him in taking a hard line while coaching the star, sources told ESPN.

Over the past week and a half, Lakers management has told the coaching staff to coach Westbrook as the coaches see fit, even if that means pulling him from a game, as Vogel did for the final 3 minutes, 52 seconds of the fourth quarter against Indiana, sources told ESPN.

One source close to the situation described the message from management to the staff as, "You got to do what you got to do."

The final straw, pushing the staff to honor their instinct to bench him, was when Caris LeVert blew by Westbrook on defense for a layup with 7 minutes, 13 seconds remaining. The coaching staff had repeatedly emphasized the scouting report to take away LeVert's right hand, and Westbrook, guarding LeVert at the top of the key one-on-one, didn't angle himself properly to thwart the drive and allowed LeVert easy access to the paint en route to the hoop.

The coaching staff had been debating whether to pull Westbrook from late-game situations for weeks, sources said, but always refrained because of worries about the lasting impact on Westbrook's psyche.

"Would you think that would bother Russ not being in a late game?" LeBron said, answering a reporter's question with a question, rather than giving a straight answer. James was left to speak on Westbrook because the 14-year veteran -- who exited the court with 8.4 seconds remaining on the clock -- departed from the arena without speaking to reporters.

"It's just something that he's not used to. You would think somebody like that would be on the court. But with the flow of the game, there's been times I haven't been in the game or other guys haven't been in the game. So I don't think it's anything personal,"said Lakers forward Carmelo Anthony. Melo like get used to it

"It's just something that Russ has got to ... " Anthony said before correcting himself midsentence, "We gotta help him figure it out."

He should have been benched....but Vogel lost leverage when he subbed in Melo and he made the worst defensive pick up(or lack thereof) in NBA history

The reason bron hush about russ because russ putting in the most effort. He's played every game this season. He was told he turnover to much so he cut it down to 0 or 1 a game. He chilled on the stats when he was told he stat pad triple doubles. he's trying to fit in and make adjustments at this point. You can't ask for much more. With the right coach and the correct complementary players around him on the court, he'd do better. He hasn't had one full season to make so many adjustments

Why does this stuff continuesly happen to Lebrons teammates, wherever he goes? Every stop, the 2nd or 3rd star gets ridiculed to the point that their viewd as Non-NBA Talent.

They shouldn't have but I was responding because dude was naming things Westbrook should have been doing for years not just trying to change this year every player should be playing defense and trying to turn the ball over less.

There have been games where Russ should have been benched from playing bad, this wasn't one of them though. He knocked down some big 3s and was doing decent defensively. He might have made some mistakes, but Vogel picked a bad time to try and keep his job through Westbrook.

Now you've pissed off your biggest signing, and it's at a point now where the damage is done and too much to recover from.

We really shouldn't have given up on our young core. We would have a youthful and exciting squad, maybe a 5th or 6th seed and no bullsh*t. Instead we gave everyone up for LeBron and have a bunch of diva sh*t ever since.
