Why is Jay-z's vol 2 so underrated?
I remember an interview years ago where Meek said vol 2 was his favorite rap album and I thought respect cause that sh*t is severely underrated and made Jay blow up. It also introduced the world to Ja Rule.
Classic album. Diverse songs, Grimey songs, catchy songs, flashy songs. Like Dat my personal fav from the album |

cuz can i get a and money aint a thang were too huge, most folks that dont listen to music but just skim thru it really just skimmed thru the rest of the album
iirc it wasnt until much later the name jay-z garnered heads undivided attention to his "album" not just the radio friendly singles... to the point where he had to say it himself reese nibbled out, classic, shoulda went triple those that listened, listened. but im talm bout casual rap fans who never thought the camel was seriously considering hisself to be a superior rapper to christopher wallace |

I remember hearing Vol. 2 on a regular weekday afternoon back in Fall 2003 with my Dad.
Paper Chase is one of my favorite tracks. That and the Posse cut "Reservoir Dogs". Sauce Money had the best verse, then Beans, and Sheek. Sheek's verse was funny and disrespectful. I don't think he could get away with the line about those African kids or Sauce talking about Adolf Hitler and having whips that were fat as they beat the slaves with. |

Good thread OP
![]() Vol. 2 is underrated, gets too much flack. I'll answer your question though. It's viewed the way it is because it's pretty poppy and polished production wise. Jay was clearly going in a more commercial direction. That rubbed people the wrong way. I think criticizing it for being too commercial is legit but if you listen to the bars Jay is spittin'. He's straight up floating on this album. His flow is so effortless. Production is solid too Wouldn't call it a classic but it's a tier below that level. I'd put it in the top half of his albums quality wise. And a very important album for his career. ![]() |
