this was in the GOLDEN ERA as we know it
son was salty that them cali boys was running the game and people wanted vibes instead of listening to preaching about a whole lot of nothing image
you know how people be complaining about the state of rap today?
son was doing this during the teenage years of hip hop
goes to show you people will bi*ch and moan about absolutely anything image image
the more he bi*ched and moaned the further it strayed from H.E.R. image image image

when i first started listening to hip hop a decade ago? not sure what you're trying to get at
i'm pointing out how ridiculous the context is of him writing the song

It's actually dope
That's how dope music is made.
You feel a way about something you make a song about it.

That's how most art is created in general.

is this supposed to be a slight? i'm in my early 20s, i wasn't around when this first dropped
did i commit some sort of cardinal sin for not knowing the exact years of music before my time?

It was abt the West dumbing down the conscious era with the rise of the gangsta rap subgenre coming to the forefront... and Common felt like NWA was the prototype for the rest of the wild sh*t coming out of the west, the Blood and Crip albums, death Row's commercial Success, and then Cube at OG status, being the face of it...

Cube basically been trying to tell Common and other's to get the Beef-Stick for a nice while, particularly because of the Common Record...
as he addresses those general sentiments in "...Used to Love H.E.R." on this opus with the good brother Face...

they literally just introduced a new subgenre of rap, and son was salty

ushering in a new era is not "dumbing down" the previous

it's even more ridiculous because this was during the GOLDEN ERA

It's like a breath of fresh air when BX actually posts hip hop sh*t in this section

Edit: OP you trippin tho n*gga this song is a classic, the beat

I think Common was moreso speakin on it from a substance matter which is understandable but I'm pretty sure Common don't feel the same today now that we've seen the real bottom of this sh*t (white bi*ches coming in the game rappin dumb sh*t, n*ggas making mockeries of the genre, etc.)

when did i say the song wasn't a classic?

the substance sh*t is one of the biggest misconceptions of rap

the only sh*t without substance is people rapping about rapping itself

rapping about women weed and weather is still substance, it's part of life

Yeah and Common started copping pleas saying he wasn't dissing the West in that BEEF DVD when he clearly was. Then he contradicted his stance when he said he fu*ked with Ice-T, Too $hort, King Tee, Compton's Most Wanted, etc.

Classic song/concept and still applies today with all this genocide music getting pushed. Spinning blocks, smoking dead opps, etc. I wish there was more of a balance.
