Paramount Pictures Released 'Juice' in Theaters 30 Years Ago

"On this date in 1992, Paramount Pictures presented the highly anticipated hood flick Juice, which stars a still rising rap star by the name of Tupac Shakur, who plays a crooked crimie from Uptown by the name of “Bishop”.

His co-star, Omar Epps(Higher Learning, In Too Deep), plays a local DJ with industry potential named “GQ”, alongside Jermaine “Huggy” Hopkins(Lean On Me) and Khalil Kain, who all form a loosely knit crew of truants who are headed in the wrong direction.

This movie was very instrumental in bringing Hip Hop artists onto the silver screen, with cameo appearances from Treach of Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, EPMD’s DJ Scratch and Special Ed. Juice also helped to introduce the soundtrack as a way to market movies for larger budgets.

For those who never took notice, it wasn’t until after ‘Pac made everyone love to hate his character Bishop that Shakur’s run-ins with the law became more frequent and his “Thug Life” persona became more noticeable and for its own intent, purposeful. Many will say that it was life imitating art. Some will say that this was the real Tupac; he was just being filmed."

RIP to the ones who lost their life and was never the same after this premiere.

'Juice' premiere brings night of violence 1 viewer k*lled, 4 wounded in f*ghts
January 19, 1992
Violence broke out at theaters in at least eight states after Friday night's premiere of the urban film drama "Juice." One teen-ager was k*lled, and four other people were wounded.

Although the f*ghts involved theatergoers, police said much of it was random violence that could have occurred anywhere.

Chicago police Detective Roland Paulnitsky said the death of a 16-year-old girl outside a theater showing "Juice" resulted from "a street altercation with a rival street gang."

"This was not a result of that movie," he said.

Many theater owners added extra security to forestall the kind of violence that plagued "Boyz 'n the Hood" and "New Jack City," two other films about inner-city life. One person was k*lled in disturbances when each of those films opened last year.

Paramount Pictures, which distributed "Juice," offered to pay for extra security for any theater that wanted it.

A Paramount spokesman in Los Angeles said yesterday that the company regrets the violence but regards the f*ghts as isolated incidents.

Managers of an Anchorage, Alaska, theater stopped the film and called police after about a dozen f*ghts broke out. There were no serious injuries.

In Chicago, Detective Paulnitsky said that Tydsa Cherry, 16, of suburban Alsip either had just seen the movie or was waiting in line for it when she was hit by a stray bullet from a f*ght between two boys waiting for tickets to the last show.

Off-duty officers moonlighting as security guards quickly arrested a 14-year-old boy, Detective Paulnitsky said.

Elsewhere, an 18-year-old Philadelphia man was paralyzed from the chest down after he was shot coming out of the movie at a theater in suburban Cheltenham, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said they had no suspects and didn't know what the f*ght was about.

In Lansing, Mich., a theater canceled yesterday's showings of the film after two groups of youths had a gunf*ght in the lobby as the movie let out Friday night.

A 17-year-old Lansing boy was hospitalized with leg wounds.

In New York City, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in a theater during a quarrel with another teen-ager.

Police in North Little Rock, Ark., said one person was injured in a f*ght in a theater there.

"Juice" tells of four black Harlem youths, including one who gets involved in a robbery that ends in murder. The movie was directed and co-written by filmmaker Ernest d*ckerson, who has worked as Spike Lee's cinematographer.

This was literally my introduction to hip hop as a jit lol.. I had the VHS and would watch the opening credits w/ "Know the ledge" and the first scene with that Big Daddy Kane song like 20 times before watching the rest of the movie

On a side note, does anyone know what Reggae song is playing in the background when Samuel L tells Q "you done slid down the razor blade and landed in the alcohol river"? Been meaning to Shazaam that for the longest lol.
