china companies control like 90% of rare earth mines where things like lithium are extracted to use in tesla's lithium ion batteries.
lithium ion batteries for cars is actually pretty stupid in the long run it's just more cost effective now. they have a limited charge rate as well as being dangerous and easily combustible. a move towards lithium-ion ev's is a massive win for china who have cornered the lithium market. what the rest of the world needs to do is move towards the much better solid state battery avenue for ev's. there's no flammable liquid like lithium-ion so your car won't randomly explode and melt you inside of it. it's lighter because it's sans-liquid. it charges quicker (80% in 15 mins) and offers longer range. it has a longer life as well, lithium-ion degrades power capacity wise after around 1k cycles, solid state maintains up to 90% power capacity after 5k cycles. and solid state batteries would use every day items to utilize the electrolyte like glass and ceramic. things no ideologically driven government has a monopoly over. |

I didn't get to check this episode of Breaking points yet but if you want to do business in China, you have to do a JV which gives them a 50% ownership of your business in China.
Not only that, they basically just steal your IP and tech then slowly phase you out as they announce their Chinese version of your products. It happened with Uber, it's happening with Tesla now as a 100% owned Chinese company just announced their "Cyber Truck" ev that looks 98% like Tesla's cyber truck |
