what was the biggest tech leap?

what was the biggest tech leap in gaming?

the biggest leap imo was

snes/genesis
to
ps1/ saturn / 64

the cutscenes were unbelievable.. the sound was cd quality.. the lighting was incredible.. and the biggest aspect was going from 2d to 3d

it was just a huge leap

the second biggest leap imo was
ps1/ saturn/ 64
to
dreamcast/ ps2/ gamecube/ xbox

this era pretty much ended arcades because games were arcade perfect or better.. the leap from blocky and pixelated 3d graphics to more realism was huge

i mean metal gear 1 on ps1.. the characters didn't even have mouths that moved.. they barely even had faces.. they just moved their heads when they talked

compare that to metal gear 2 on ps2.. characters had detailed faces, eyes, teeth, no longer blocky, etc.. or take tekken 3 on ps1 vs virtua f*ghter 4 on ps2.. the difference is bananas

what do u think were the biggest tech leaps we've seen?

or maybe just say what is the biggest leap u personally experienced

personally, goin from ps3 to ps4 pro and horizon zero dawn was another big leap

Is cartridges to CDs a valid answer? If not, I agree with you

Going from 2D cartridge era to polygonal 3D era. FF VII showed just major of a leap gaming made with polygonal based designs and FMV's and Super Mario 64 took platforming to an entirely new level.

I pretty much agree with threadstarter,

SNES, genesis to playstation, 64 is the first biggest,

Playstation, 64 to dreamcast, xbox,ps2, gamecube is the second

Feel blessed to be the proper age range and had all those systems to experience the transition

biggest tech leap for me was when we moved to online gaming. Changed everything from how we verse each other to longevity of games with dlc.

Taking it to heads on NBA 2K on the Dreamcast.

My mom whooped my a*s for running up a $200 phone bill in one month.

good point

i do wonder if younger peeps can even truly appreciate gaming the way we do

i am inclined to say the answer is no

we saw the growth

I had never been more wowd when I saw the dreamcast for the first time in a bestbuy. Baseball game. The players faces and animations looked so real. I had to have one.

And I had the nes genesis etc and jumped to the ps1 and 64. So the games jumped way ahead in being advanced then. But graphically going from that to the dreamcast impressed my eyes the most. Haven't had the same feeling since.
i definitely feel u.. man leaving those blocky graphics behind was the best feeling

that's why i copped dreamcast day one.. i was SO tired of blocky graphics man.. even when that's all we had.. i was just over it

i liked the ps1 games tho don't get me wrong

but dreamcast's colors, resolution, polycount, and framerate were insane

crazy taxi was like the first open world type game i ever played.. i couldn't believe how big it was lol

a lot of games on dreamcast were 60 frames.. i never really knew why they were so crisp but that was part of it

Agreed. I don't think there will ever be another point in my life like what it was like seeing Soul Caliber on Dreamcast for the first time. I was absolutely astonished.

If you grew up and lived through these tech advances between generations you’re blessed.

New age gamers won’t be able to fully appreciate, graphics and sound quality it the way OG gamers do.

Remember when voice actors wasnt a thing? Just sound effects as dialogue text flew in speech bubbles?

I agree with OP, just because I’m old. Old head checking in.. Going from 2D 16bit to polygonal 3D was cutting edge for the time. It added a whole new dimension and depth to console gaming. It was the predecessor to modern gaming as we know it.

I’m old enough to to remember when PS1, Sega Saturn, and N64 was new. Nintendo was still releasing games for the Super Nintendo. No one cared. Unlike today, back then, you had to upgrade your hardware.

Ready 2 Rumble boxing launching on Dreamcast looked incredible.

So did Sonic Adventure, NFL2K, and Soul Calibur.

Then there were the VMUs, and online gaming like PSO.

Dreamcast was the biggest leap by a good margin.

Genesis to 64 because 3d was such a game changer. Superior audio. Going from the limited sounds of streets of rage or vectorman to full compositions and licensed music on the ps1 and 64. FMVs, voice acting.

N64 to the next gen was close though. When Shenmue first dropped, it was damn near unbelievable how much that little machine was able to do when you pushed it to the limit. The character models, cinematic camera direction in game, the environment, the amount of dialogue. Soup Calibur solidified the takeover of arcades as the ultimate display in graphical capability. Then you had metal gear for the ps2, Dead or Alive, Def Jam FFNY, Doom3.

16-bit era to the 32/64-bit era, easily.

The jump to 3D was insane back in the day. Not only the original games, but also the arcade ports. Bringing arcade gaming into your house was a game changer.

The correct answer in gaming for consoles would be the jump from 16bit to 32bit for sure...The introduction of Disc based gaming and the architecture needed to support it did way more for audio quality, rendering, video quality, and overall image quality then we've ever seen.

Crazy thing is the story of the Sega Saturn...It wasn't built for 3D Rendering like the PS1 was, but it was built with 60fps gaming and speed(although 2D/2.5D)...I think it actually has more 60fps titles than PS3 and Xbox 360 combined - but they looked like sh*t lol.

So I'd say its a combination of going 32bit and making 3D rendering a priority like Sony did for the PS1....Thats realistically the largest leap compared to the generation before it in gaming history.

Cool thread

I liked when the 360 came out. Turned consoles into an entertainment system. Streaming Netflix and YouTube plus playing movies through the usb was amazing to me

Underrated leap too, when consoles began to have streaming as a standard that’s when everyone opened a Netflix account.
