Xbox Series S was ‘Black Friday’s most popular console’, it’s claimed

According to Adobe’s Digital Economy Index data (first highlighted by Business Insider), the cheaper Series S outside both PS5, Switch OLED Model and the more expensive Xbox Series X during the biggest holiday sale day of the year.

Adobe claims its data comes from analysing 1 trillion visits to retail sites, in addition to surveying over 1,000 retailers on their most popular items.

If accurate, a key element of Series S’s popularity is likely that, unlike the highly sought-after PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Series S has been widely available to purchase during Black Friday week. At the time of publishing, it’s still in stock at many retailers.

That’s according to new data from Ampere Analytics, which estimates that the digital-only console is outperforming the more powerful Series X partly due to supply constraints and component shortages.

“Microsoft’s two-tier product strategy was a bold move at launch of the Series generation and the lesser-powered Series S has come into its own against a backdrop of component shortages and Xbox Series X supply constraints,” wrote Ampere’s games research director, Piers Harding-Rolls.

At $300 / £250, the Xbox Series S console is significantly cheaper than the $500 / £449 Series X, thanks to lower specs than target 1440p gaming instead of native 4K.

According to Ampere, the success of the Series S is said to be having a significant impact on Xbox digital game sales when compared to the PlayStation 5, which still positions its disc-based model ahead of the digital-only SKU in retail.

Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has previously said he expects the Xbox Series S to outsell Xbox Series X over the course of the console generation.

The word about Halo Infinite is getting around...I've seen a few people say they need to get a Series S since the X is hard to find just to play Infinite with decent enough graphics

Halo is a legitimate system seller...It's like Mario, Pokemon and Animal Crossing...Forza Horizon 5 is a bonus

Also, a lot of people have been talking about building emulator arcade cabinets with a Series S instead of a Raspberry Pi or PC because the power vs cost ratio is amazing...Pi's can't run the newer stuff, plus the backwards compatibility factor makes a series s appealing

I wanted a series X for Halo but nothing else appeals to me yet on the series X.

Competition good for everyone but I can't find any Ps5s or Series X anywhere in the stores.

It’s the only thing available. The decision to manufacture more of those instead of the series x baffles me, considering the series x would of sold just as much. That price tag is not keeping people away especially when it’s been a shortage.

I feel like people just don't know any better. If you are grabbing a S then you could have just used a laptop, desktop, or iPad for free (assuming most people are getting Gamepass anyway and couch co-op is pretty much dead)

Game pass sucks on PC. It’s a headache even getting a game to load properly plus too many updates.

What did that have to do with anything, though? It works perfectly fine on consoles, which is what we were talking about. Xbox.com/play is much different than Gamepass for PC

MS said for years that nobody has to buy a Series S or X because of how they have xcloud setup now but people just buy things blindly with no research or any knowledge of what they are buying or what’s out there

Kids and casuals man. not to mention it's still pretty dope for people who have interest in back compat with the 360. There's still a decent amount of those games that don't have native PC versions.

When y’all are saying PC versions are y’all talking about Gamepass for PC or do this many people not know that you can stream a WHOLE XBOX on Xbox.com/play? On any device with a browser…360 games and all. Every device with a browser is a Series S; literally.

Series S doesn’t have a disk drive so I’m a*suming y’all just don’t know about being able to stream from the Xbox site and it’s been that way for almost a year
