Canelo 800k ppv buys, Usman v Covington 700k ppv buys

Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand reported (H/T TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter) on Monday that last month’s UFC 268 blockbuster pulled in an estimated 700,000 buys domestically, aka purchases made exclusively through ESPN+ in the United States. Obviously the global number is higher but to what extent is unknown.

BoxingScene.com has learned that the total buy rate for the Showtime Pay-Per-View event headlined by Alvarez’s 11th-round knockout of Caleb Plant is on track to reach 800,000. That total includes only domestic buys in the United States through cable and satellite operators, as well as digital sales that have consistently accounted for an increasing number of buys in 2021.

Good numbers for both events. UFC more than doubled the PPV sales of the first f*ght and Canelo was able to put up big numbers vs a little known f*ghter, against a stacked UFC card.

Canelo really is the king in boxing right.

Didn’t Fury/Wilder 3 do 800K as well? And that was #1 vs #2

Yeah I hope for a day where boxing throws a handful of great meaningful f*ghts together on one card. Would do 2 million buys easily. But that’s not how that sport works.

The sport should continue utilizing FOX, Showtime, DAZN, and ESPN+.

There may not be a lot of PPV stars, but there are a lotta young guys that can build great TV followings.

The problem with boxing is the red tape. That's it. Boxing is the sweet science. It has the history, the even technique of the fair one.

We all had fair ones.

Imagine squaring up with a dude and he kick ya head off ya shoulders. It's a dope combat sport but highly unrelatable.

Was this even up for debate. With the way PPV markets work (essentially only in North America), if you can get that Mexican market you got it made in the shade.

It’s crazy that guys with less of a following wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to be on Canelo’s card as a co-main. Literally would become that much more popular if you put on a show.

Imagine of they were on different days. They both could have made more instead of forcing people to chose between the 2.

In combat sports, you can represent an entire country. And the only way an American f*ghter gets that kind of love or hate is when he’s representing MAGA like Colby does.

Canelo being at the top of the mountain and representing Mexico, it gives his base an extra 2-3 weekends to gather family around, pop some modelo, and watch him knock someone out. As long as he keeps doing that, he’ll keep getting decent buy rates.

i do wonder how people tune in to watch Canelo in Mexico, have a feeling they arent really paying for it but everyone there is watching so i believe Canelos ppv buys would hit a mil if they were. Also i may not have a clue what im talking bout

Bars who purchase the f*ght. Thats the biggest issue with boxing in America not enough bars/sport bars purchase PPV f*ghts because the following in most the USA is too niche
