Oct 21 - Bidenís support fading, survey finds concerns on the economy, Covid and inflation

KEY POINTS
Just 41% of the public approve of President Joe Bidenís job performance, compared to 52% who disapprove, according to the CNBC All-America Economic Survey.
Fifty percent now approve of his Covid-19 handling, compared to 53% in July, and 45% disapprove, compared to just 38%.
Inflation now ties with the coronavirus as the biggest concern for Americans, up 16 points from the prior survey.

President Joe Bidenís approval rating slipped deeply underwater in the CNBC All-America Economic Survey as Americans soured on his economic leadership, lost some confidence in his handling of the coronavirus and grew increasingly concerned about inflation and supply shortages.

Just 41% of the public approve of Bidenís handling of the presidency, compared to 52% who disapprove. The poll of 800 Americans, conducted Oct. 14-17, has a margin of error of 3.5%.

Bidenís negative 11-point net rating compared with a positive 3 points in the July survey, when 48% approved and 45% disapproved.

Behind the decline is a surge in negative views of his handling of the economy, with just 40% approving and 54% disapproving, a 7-point increase from July.

A bare majority of Americans still approve his handling of the coronavirus, but the margin narrowed considerably. Fifty percent now approve compared to 53% in July, and 45% disapprove, compared to just 38%.

The presidentís numbers are declining as concerns about the economy, inflation and supply shortages rise sharply.

Inflation now ties with the coronavirus as the biggest concern for Americans, up 16 points from the prior survey. A plurality of 47% of the public believe there will be a recession in the next year, up 13 points from when the question was last asked in 2019.

ďLast quarter, the economic numbers were flashing yellow for Biden, but now thatís intensified and the light is flashing red, and itís accompanied by multiple blaring sirens,Ē said Micah Roberts, partner at Public Opinion Strategies, the Republican pollster for the survey.

Recession worries come with increasingly negative views about the current and future state of the economy: 46% say the economy will get worse in the year ahead, the most in the 13-year history of the poll and 79% judge the economy as just fair or poor, the most since 2014.

image

Just 31% say now is a good time to invest in stocks, the lowest since 2016.

Jay Campbell, partner with Hart Research a*sociates, the Democratic pollster for the survey, points out that Bidenís numbers on the coronavirus are particularly worrisome since he believes Bidenís perceived ability to deal with the pandemic was a major reason for his election.

ďIf the economy doesnít get back on track, and the Coronavirus doesnít reverse course at some point soon, then this is a presidency thatís going to be in real trouble,Ē he said.

The survey clearly shows Americans noticing the supply and labor shortages that are plaguing businesses. Some 60% of the public say goods that were once easy to buy are in short supply, including food and groceries, paper products and cleaning products.

Also, 66% appear to have noticed labor shortages, saying they have experienced stores closed on odd days or at strange hours when they normally would be open.

The one modestly piece of good news for the president in the poll is that a plurality of Americans supports a plan before Congress that would increase spending for childcare, clean energy, community colleges and long-term care for the elderly.

The survey found 41% of respondents support the measure, 30% oppose it and a large 29% say they donít know enough to answer. A 51% majority support the plan when told the cost of the plan is between $1.5 and $2.2 trillion. And 57% back the bill when told it will be paid for by increasing taxes on corporations and those earning more than $400,000 a year.

Poll are meaningless now

Only people responding are the ones who REALLY love him or REALLY hate him. Everybody else doesn't care enough to answer a poll.

If Biden cared about his presidency he’d get sinema and manchin in line, you’d think he was at least aware that his presidency at the moment hinges on that reconciliation bill

What can he do to get them in line? lol.

Manchin is threatening to leave the party altogether, and Sinema won't come to the negotiation table. The Republicans are all united against the bill so that's out of the question. Only other thing to do is to cave to their demands which seems like that's where it is headed. They're cutting back the bill to about 1.9T from recent reports.

People need to take a civics class. The things he's getting blamed for are out of his control. We have 3 co-equal branches govt. Not a totalitarian regime. We're not China or NK where the leader and his party has single party rule.

When you are the commander in chief and things are going well, all credit is attributed to the president and his regime. Well the same also holds true if you are a leader whose under-performing. That's always been how it is. No exceptions are going to be made for this administration. It comes with the territory.

Just because that's how the majority of the nation incorrectly thinks it doesn't mean you should do the same when you know better.

If you know that POTUS has zero influence over the legislature, particularly the opposing party in the legislature, why would you hold him responsible for the opposing party's failure to act in congress? Just because the majority of the country incorrectly attributes everything to the president?

I didn't do that with Trump, I won't do it with Biden. It's called intellectual integrity.

Or do you think that it's fine to do it because the majority of the country behaves that way?

Sooooo your solution is that the President of the United States should extort him? Which is illegal. Its not like the story would get out and become a huge scandal or anything.

It’s still too early to call it. You can’t undo everything from the last presidency in a year.

It really doesn't matter because at the end of the day people are naive and don't understand how things work. This is why we always end up back at square one every 4 years. People need to pay more attention. Call your local representatives And throw money behind more progressive candidates instead of electing these same career politicians in congress who are out of touch with the mainstream.

You are correct, sir. It may indeed be erroneous to apply that logic; however, that's just the tradition. It's the same with basketball. When a LeBron team wins an NBA championship, the credit is largely attributed to LeBron, and when LeBron loses an NBA finals, the blame and ridicule is also largely shouldered on LeBron. Biden even participates in that tradition as well. Last year during his campaign when there were supply chain issues during the lockdown, he blamed the leadership of the nation for it. So in this scenario: What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Ima keep it all the way buck, this site is the only place period that has any sort of support for Joe Biden. The people I know personally that did everything but drive me to voting booths themselves to vote for Joe Biden have expressed regret in voting for him.

That’s why I say there’s dudes who just come on here looking to argue cause there’s absolutely no way a regular American still fu*ks with this guy. I honestly believe he already has a worse public perception than Trump. At least somebody liked him
