China surprises U.S. with nuclear-capable hypersonic missile test

China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August, showing a capability that caught U.S. intelligence by surprise, the Financial Times reported, citing five unnamed sources.

The report late on Saturday said the Chinese military launched a rocket carrying a hypersonic glide vehicle that flew through low-orbit space, circling the globe before cruising towards its target, which it missed by about two dozen miles.

“The test showed that China had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realized,” the report said, citing people briefed on the intelligence.
China’s ministry of defense did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment from Reuters on Sunday.

The United States and Russia are also developing hypersonic missiles, and last month North Korea said it had test-fired a newly-developed hypersonic missile.

At a 2019 parade, China showcased advancing weaponry including its hypersonic missile, known as the DF-17.

Ballistic missiles fly into outer space before returning on steep trajectories at higher speeds. Hypersonic weapons are difficult to defend against because they fly towards targets at lower altitudes but can achieve more than five times the speed of sound — or about 6,200 km per hour (3,850 mph).

Explainer: China joins heated race for new missiles, vies with U.S., Russia

SEOUL, Oct 18 (Reuters) - China reportedly tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic glide vehicle from an near-orbital trajectory in August, amid an intensifying race for the next generation of long-range weapons that are harder to detect and intercept.

The United States and Russia have conducted tests of hypersonic weapons in recent months, and North Korea said last month it had tested a newly developed hypersonic missile.

HOW THE MISSILE WORKS

Hypersonic missiles travel at more than five times the speed of sound in the upper atmosphere - or about 6,200 km per hour (3,850 mph). This is slower than an intercontinental ballistic missile, but the shape of a hypersonic glide vehicle allows it to manoeuvre toward a target or away from defences.

Combining a glide vehicle with a missile that can launch it partially into orbit - a so-called fractional orbital bombardment system (FOBS) - could strip adversaries of reaction time and traditional defences mechanisms.

Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), by contrast, carry nuclear warheads on ballistic trajectories that travel into space but never reach orbit.

Both the U.S. and USSR studied FOBS during the Cold War, and the USSR deployed such a system starting in the 1970s. It was removed from service by the mid-80s. Submarine-launched ballistic missiles had many of the advantages of FOBS - reducing detection times and making it impossible to know where a strike would come from - and were seen as less destabilising than FOBS.

WHO LEADS THE RACE

The Financial Times reported on Saturday that China had launched a rocket carrying a hypersonic glide vehicle that flew through space, circling the globe before cruising down toward its target, which it missed by about two dozen miles.

In July, Russia successfully tested a Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile, which President Vladimir Putin touted as part of a new generation of missile systems. Moscow also tested the weapon from a submarine for the first time.

The United States said in late September that it had tested an air-breathing hypersonic weapon - meaning it sustain flight on its own through the atmosphere like a cruise missile - marking the first successful test of that class of weapon since 2013.

Days after the U.S. announcement, North Korea fired a newly developed hypersonic missile, calling it a "strategic weapon" that boosted its defence capabilities, though some South Korean analysts described the test as a failure.

WHY IT MATTERS

The recent tests are the moves in a dangerous arms race in which smaller Asian nations are striving to develop advanced long-range missiles, alongside major military powers.

Hypersonic weapons, and FOBS, could be a concern as they can potentially evade missile shields and early warning systems.

Some experts cautioned against hype surrounding missiles such as the one China tested in August.

"China already has ~100 nuclear-armed ICBMs that can strike the U.S.," said Jeffrey Lewis, a missile specialist at the U.S.-based James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, responding to the FT report on Twitter. "Although the glider is a nice touch ... this is an old concept that is newly relevant as a way to defeat missile defences."

Humanity lost with these. With these missiles there's no early warning or no way to shoot them down they evade missile defenses. Only way to tell they are coming is when they're falling from the sky and seen on radar then it's too late This why space should have never been weaponized. The real name for this is the Rod of God.

military trying to drum up more $$$ through the media is all this is. this type of strike method is not new it's decades old. soviets developed the same thing before they collapsed.
. just the military trying to instill fear in politicians to pass more sweet sweet greenbacks into their hands.

per usual, the americans and the media continue to fall for the over hype of a potential foe just like with the soviets who never stood a chance in actually attacking america (without destroying itself) either. chinese don't have any weapon the americans don't either already been had, or know all about. also... something most people don't know is the US navy and the higher elements of the PLA navy are in constant dialogue and work closely together to avoid actual hot war. in the early 90s after tianamin square herbert walker bush cut off diplomatic relations with the ccp politburo and ordered the pacific command headquarters to open up an alternate dialogue with the heads of the chinese central military commission. they've been in touch as a back line in case the two governments lost their minds since...

Ain't no country dropping nuclear bombs on anyone, especially the U.S.A. Doing that would make sure their country would be wiped off the map and fu*k up the planet.

They actually aren’t concerned about that.. the propaganda machine is more concerned about chaos and actually believing that us military is not the same it’s always been has set you way off course

Mutually a*sured destruction is probably one of the biggest reasons we haven't absolutely fu*ked each other over yet. It's a stupid and fu*ked up reason, but still a real world deterrent.
