A part of it might be different audiences.

Those older movies you mentioned are aimed at young kids who care less about appearances.

High school musical is aimed at high school aged kids where everything is about how you look etc.

I think in general there’s a lack of original non-animated kids movies being made today.

Would a title like "Indian in a Cupboard" even fly today?

Movie was dope tho, remember that sh*t when I was a kid.

Indian and the Cowboy became homies from being mortal enemies Movies had deeper messages in them back then.

Those kinda kids still get cast today on the "body positivity" angle. They just don't get made fun of for being ugly or fat like they would've in the past.

It wasn’t just ugly kids OP. All kids were casted… same as now.

Some movies just had to have the characters look a certain part. Same as now

Maybe they don’t make movies that where the kid has to be dorky. The 90s were more realistic and relatable

U want every actor to be a Leonardo or matt Damon? No, the kids looked like how kids in your class looked. Come on man. This shouldn’t be a thread

Don't even know who to blame
China not watching them so they don't make it, or kids nowdays don't have childhood cause they watch marvel and YouTube only
Either way, atleast the classics stay classics......let's not forget all them Robin Williams, Jim Carrey movies

Problem is every movie in the OP and the ones y'all mentioning all flopped when they came out in theaters so you can't blame China because even America wasn't watching the majority of those sh*ts

They wanted the Big Green to be the next Mighty Ducks, it made like 3 million dollars profit. Heavyweights flopped in theaters, Camp Nowhere flopped in theaters. Indian in the Cupboard flopped in theaters

What these movies all have in common is they didn't do sh*t in theaters after big marketing campaigns and budgets, but they all went on to be cult hits on home video, and staples of basic cable. That's where the nostalgia comes from for most. Most of those 90s movies I saw in elementary school on rainy days when a another kid brought it in.

Studios realized they was wasting money putting anything in theaters for kids that wasn't CGI animated, or superhero based, cuz those the only things a lot of parents will pay for a family of tickets for. All the other sh*t can go straight to DVD, Streaming, or VOD, and they make out way better than when they was trying to push all these kids movies to theaters in the 90s

Ive watched Heavyweights and Sandlot damn near 50 times each and I could name hundreds of movies that were classics. Our generation was spoiled between the movies, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.
