Not many were better than Steve Young's 1994 season, but for the sake of THIS discussion, you could add Lamar Jackson to your list.

Why? Because the two actually have similar skill sets (except that Lamar is much, MUCH better runner--he's far more productive). And before someone says, "But Steve Young is more accurate"....As stated in the OP, Young's completion percentage was 64.3%. Lamar's is 64.1.

"Lamar doesn't throw for enough yards". That's true (he averages just over 154 yards per game), but Young only averaged 196 yards per game.

Young's career passer rating was 96.8, Lamar's is 101.9. Young's TD/INT ratio was: 2.16 (232-107) Lamar's is 3.5 (70-20).

Get Lamar a Pro Bowl level wide receiver and imagine how much more productive he could be.

But, to be fair, Peak Steve Young (92-94) is awfully hard to beat.

Hell to the naw
For one the game has evolved
You can’t really compare tds and yards to 27 years ago
Different game
And LJ might be a better athlete
He needs hardware to even be in the discussion
So far not looking good
He’s like 1-3 in the playoffs

LJ isn’t winning more than one
He will be lucky to even get one
LJ can’t make that 3rd and 10 throw when it count sin the playoffs
Until he can show me that he is reliable in the clutch, u can’t say he’s better than a Steve Young

Folks gonna hate on you for this take but they won't have ANY numbers to back it up ..people look for any and every reason to hate on any black quarterback... especially lj.

I'd say Russell is up there too kinda reminds me of him when he runs and has the hardware to back it up...guess what?????

1. If we're not going to compare eras, this thread is pointless. The discussion is about active QBs (today) vs. Steve Young. That is--by definition--a discussion that compares QBs of different eras. If you can't compare Jackson and Young for hat reason, then you also can't compare Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, etc. to Young.

2. An MVP Award is "hardware".

3. Steve Young was on three championship teams, but he was sitting behind Joe Montana for two of them--1994 was HIS only championship. He was 8-6 in the playoffs as a starter. Three of those victories were during his Super Bowl run in '94. Saying that "Steve Young has 3 chips" is like saying that David Humm has 2 chips. I'm sure that you're thinking, "who the fu*k is David Humm?". He happened to be the backup QB when the Raiders won the Super Bowl in '76 and again when they won it in 1983...but he didn't have anything to do with them winning the title (either time).

I’m saying u have to inflate Steve young’s passing yards to compare apples to apples
The rules changes have made it a pass happy league

Lj isn’t a winner when it counts u can’t say he’s better than a proven winner

Ok he only earned one ring
I don’t even count Kd’s rings so I damn sure ain’t gonna count the ones Joe Montana earned
But concussions stopped his career early af

Good call on Wilson. Just looking at the numbers, Wilson is better in almost every category (in fewer games). Young has more MVPs and 1st Team All-Pro selections, but Russell is playing in the greatest QB era in NFL history.

The rules changes have made it a pass happy league
The rule changes that started this trend toward a pass-happy NFL were instituted a long time ago. The biggest change was the "Illegal Contact" penalty that made it illegal to play bump-and-run coverage. That rule was passed in 1978, but it wasn't strictly enforced until the 90s (around the time that Steve Young took over leadership of the Niners).

Last year (2020), the NFL (league-wide) averaged 240 yards passing per game on 35.2 att/gm. In 1994, it was 213 yards/gm on 33.6. There isn't much of a disparity in those numbers.

In 1994, 7 teams attempted 600 or more passes during the season:

New England Patriots -- 699
Minnesota Vikings -- 673
Atlanta Falcons -- 629
Miami Dolphins -- 627
Denver Broncos -- 626
Kansas City Chiefs -- 615
Green Bay Packers -- 609

Last season (2020), 9 teams attempted 600 or more passes:

Pittsburgh Steelers -- 656
Dallas Cowboys -- 639
Kansas City Chiefs -- 630
Atlanta Falcons -- 628
Los Angeles Chargers -- 627
Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- 626
Jacksonville Jaguars --616
Chicago Bears -- 614
Washington Football Team -- 601

The current era isn't that much more "pass happy" than the 90s were.

He's right...Young was only the starter for 1 of those SB championships...Montana was the starter for those other two.

Young really didn't become a full-time starter until the age of 30 or 31

Steve Young is a*sociated with such a good time in not only Niners history but the history of the league so thats what makes him undeniable for HOF

when you follow up Montana like that, with such heart, mobility and great receiver core you just say fu*k the numbers

its about a feeling that he gave us.
