An Ancient Bitcoin Stash Worth $30 Million Just Moved

The stash was worth $8,195 when it was first deposited.

image

In brief
•A Bitcoin wallet that lay practically dormant for nine years suddenly came online today.
•The wallet contained 616 Bitcoins.
•In the time the wallet has lain dormant, the price of Bitcoin has gone from $13 to $47,811.

A Bitcoin wallet that had been practically dormant for almost nine years finally showed signs of life today when its owner transferred all of its 616 bitcoins to a different wallet.

On December 10, 2012, the wallet received some 616.2004 Bitcoin. Back then, Bitcoin was worth $13.30 and the entire transaction was worth about $8,195. However, with Bitcoin worth $47,811 today, the stash has ballooned to a princely $29.4 million.

The Bitcoin moved today at 05:50 UTC, according to blockchain explorer Blockchain.com. The value of the pot appears to have grown by 0.00001 Bitcoin through 21 intermittent transactions of negligible quantities that went into the wallet over the course of the twelve years, meaning the wallet owner has also made 47 cents.

Around a decade ago, when the wallet received its 616 Bitcoin, investors may have had limited expectations about Bitcoin’s price and traded the coin like it was chump change. At today’s prices, people who held onto the coin became Bitcoin whales.

Earlier this year, a wallet containing $5 million in Bitcoin came online again after lying dormant since June 2010.

And last year, a wallet containing Bitcoin mined in February 2009—one month after the first Bitcoin block was mined—cashed out to the tune of $500,000, prompting (unfounded) speculation that the transaction had something to do with Bitcoin’s enigmatic creator, the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakomoto.

Today’s big wallet news doesn’t merit much speculation. Still, it’s a powerful reminder of the wonders of investing: an increase of 358,655% over nine years is big stuff.

Before China outlawed mining weren't they letting folks hook into their dam's power grids to run mining operations? Ive always wondered if China had a stash built up and would cash it in at sometime. Wonder how you cash out something like this as a country without any intelligence services figuring out the play? I don't think it would be the nation but multiple citizens as the face of the holders. They don't let their people move freely and we know that from the work of Zhao Wei.

I cant imagine what this person felt IF this was as a situation where someone forgot their recovery seed phrase or forgot about a wallet, found it, and was able to get in their wallet and finally access their bread.

9 years is a long a*s time to know about a wallet and perform a deposit or withdrawal.

Is it safe to just transfer into a stable coin?

Or should I just completely cash it out?

I dont know man

That is a very good question, but I'm also lost right now , tranfer to stable buy back when it's cheaper and possibly get more coins in the process

cash out and salvage what little profits you made

Or hodl and ride the thing out

It's really a tough question to answer and I hope someone with a little more knowledge chimes in

When you transfer to stablecoin its a taxable transaction. If you buy back lower and sell high again its also taxable transaction

There's ways if you're that paranoid. Spin up a private node and funnel it through mixers. Smaller batches through Lightning. Custodial services. P2P exchanges.

Either way, it wouldn't really matter from a defense standpoint if China wanted to cash out reserves in Bitcoin. It's just like any other a*set.
