A Bronx sergeant who died on the job last month overdosed on fentanyl — and was once caught buying the deadly drug across the street from his precinct station house, The Post has learned.
Sgt. Ryan Kenny, 40, who had been on the force for 18 years, was found unresponsive in the third-floor locker room at the 50th Precinct building on Kingsbridge Avenue around 12:20 a.m. on Aug. 14.
At the time, police officials believed Kenny had suffered a fatal heart attack, but sources told The Post Wednesday the sergeant had died of a drug overdose.
An investigation later uncovered a video of the officer purchasing the fentanyl outside of the Kingsbridge precinct, according to a high-ranking department source. It was unclear when he had bought the drugs.
The source added that Kenny suffered an injury years ago when he worked in Queens and may have developed an opioid addiction.
The father of 11-year-old triplets was beloved by his fellow officers, according to a GoFundMe set up for his family that has raised more than $31,000 as of Wednesday.
“He was a man known for his humorous character that left all who encountered him with endless stories of the man he was,” the organizer wrote. “Unfortunately, Sergeant Kenny died unexpectedly in the 50th Precinct during his tour.”
Kenny’s wife, Laura, declined to comment when reached by phone.
An NYPD spokeswoman said the “matter was under internal review.”
