Car theft is rampant these days and one popular target for thieves is dealerships. While some criminals break into car dealers at night, boosting as many vehicles as they can before the police show up, others like the guy who took a new C8 Corvette just steal cars from the dealerships right in front of the employees in broad daylight.

Watch some thieves almost k*ll a dealership employee for a car here.
Posted to Reddit, the video we’ve embedded shows an unnamed dealership where what looks like a salesman is standing next to a red C8 Corvette parked right outside the glass doors on a cement pad. You can hear the V8 rumbling as the sales guy stands next to the American sports car, likely trying to talk to the guy inside (but the video quality isn’t good enough for us to tell for sure).

Someone inside the dealership says, “He’s gonna drive the car” as the Chevy pulls forward slightly while the salesman tries grabbing the door handle. The guy behind the wheel stops for a moment and it’s obvious the dealer employee is talking excitedly at that point, probably because he realizes the guy is flirting with stealing the Corvette.

People inside the dealership start asking where the guy thinks he’s going, but we all know the answer to that question. As the C8 keeps rolling forward someone calls out that the police need to be called. Only seconds later, the guy punches it and the Corvette speeds away. The dealership employees seem astounded, the man outside putting his hands up like he doesn’t know what to do.

This is the sad reality we’re living in today where test drives turn into robberies. There’s a lot of discussion about what’s fueling this trend, from judges going light on car theft (and other crimes) to the chip shortage making thieves bolder. Whatever is causing this, dealerships need to adapt and take more precautions or they’ll suffer more losses like this one.

1) All dealerships can't sell vette's your mechanics have to be certified and a lot of spots won't pay for it, or the specific tools needed to repair.
2) The highest volume dealerships might only have 1-3 in stock since production has been super limited and they're going for double retail, while flying out the door.
3) They fooling for having it outside and not in the showroom. The spots that usually do have them will place them in the front of the showroom, by the doors, so in the event they gotta do a test drive, it's easier to get it outside.
4) Unless you have a donor/salvage C8 vin, that car will be a ghost for the rest of it's existence. Can't take it in to a dealership for repair.
- Best case scenario is they find it crashed or parted out.
- Most likely scenario is that it's in a shipping container going overseas.

The camera angle and the fact that this came from Reddit means it's most likely fake, but the C8 has to be one of the ugliest cars ever created. It's like a bunch of bad ideas combined into one car.

OnStar has to be activated, but if the car had a over the air software update, IT might be able to push an emergency activation through. If the thieves know where the antenna is, it can be disabled and that would block the call. Only reason I know is I used to work for Onstar and dealt with a similar situation

Nothings usually activated (Onstar/Sirius) since they're optional and require credit cards on file, so it's the customer discretion. It's on the Global B platform, which means the tech runs in conjunction with a network (to a certain degree), so they may have put a emergency location feature on the car. The big issue I would see with that is privacy concerns, but no telling what you sign when you buying a car and get that big a*s contract.
