50 probably had the biggest impact of any NY artist musically during his run. Granted it was a short run, but was the most dominant. He's reinvented himself with this TV exec run.

Jay has more of a consistent longevity.

50 made too many enemies by beefing with other NY rappers, so out of the two Jay easily

I think it’s Hov over 50, but NY definitely loves Big over everybody. He was the original KONY

Jay easily. What's funny is that 50 nowadays probably gets more love in Texas than his own home state outside of South Jamaica Queens.

Jay isn't particularly loved in the streets like that but his prime(96-03) is generally looked at more fondly than 50's prime and more New Yorkers have him as a GOAT than 50. 50 still gets love too but more so as an icon and media mogul than a rapper.

I'm from NJ but I have fam all over NYC in Brooklyn, Queens, and Harlem. In barbershop hip hop convos, 50 ain't even in the picture while Hov always is. TV is keeping 50 relevant of course just like with Ice Cube but I wouldn't say that it's making 50 more "loved" than Jay. He's just appealing to a different demographic.

50 at the end of the day,

G-Unit and Dipset mixtapes were classic back then plus 50 wasn't a friendly nikka to these industry cats. He came up in the streets and wasn't a studio gangster. I ain't never heard 50 getting robbed and victimized in the streets during his prime.

Y'all love Jay-Z now but people fail to forget that Nas had nikkas saying "fu*k Jay-Z" everywhere he went in NYC

The other NY rappers were throwing rocks and hiding their hands...

murder Inc put out fake paperwork and everyone ran with it

Like Pac did back in 1996 with Bad Boy, 50 went at everyone who had a opinion while siding with Ja and Irv

Jay and it’s because jay played the game wayyy safer then 50. Jay could spit but knew who too beef n play around wit n who not too. 50 took in all the smoke at all times was bullying while crews was a monster in the rap game n everbodies fan bases tht be beefed wit didn’t turn into a 50 fan n his formula died out. Jay had more freedoms than 50 had if jay did wat 50 did he woulda been out the game mid 2000’s.

GRODT sold over a million copies in New York alone. How many rappers went platinum based on hometown sales?

True.

50 wanted all the smoke. 50 a different breed to Hov and came up different tho.

Hov ducked mad smoke and took the corporate route.

When I was last in New York I got a taxi from JFK to Times Square (where I was staying) and we ended up going through South Jamaica Queens - taxi driver was a hip hop head and I said “this is where 50 Cent is from” and he didn’t know that! He even hit me with “did he drop any music after that Kanye sh*t?”

Had to suppress the inner Stan and let my homie live

Back to the subject tho - I think Hov wins here. Hov did it ALL himself

This.

But, funnily enough, I still own a G Unit coat that I owned since like 2006 and when I go to certain spots in NJ or NY, I get some people looking at my coat and shouting "G-G-G-G Unit!" out loud in public lol.

Look (Pop Smoke voice). They are both loved in NYC. Jay-Z is the all time king of Hip-Hop and there is no question about it. So there is your answer.

Jay-Z

Lot of people have him as a goat or in the top 5

These days people respect/know 50 more for power and his tv shows

Not to say he wasn’t a beast musically in his prime

But it is what it is…

Jay

New York tried to scapegoat 50 for the downfall of East Coast Hip Hop at one point.

50 had fans to execs pissed off at him. He’s recovered but a lot of people don’t fu*k with 50. And musically Jay never stopped really. 50 definitely has hit a
pit stop he never left musically.

So Jay.
