Mazda 3, Civic or Otherwise - 15K Budget

About to leave NYC and I'm going to need a car to get around in the new city. Want something that's reliable, not too worried about flash.

Everything I've read says if you want reliable you go for a Civic or Corolla, but I've also heard good things about the Mazda 3.

What y'all think?

Mazda is more fun to drive and quite reliable. I voted Civic though because it is a proven car that can last for well over a decade with no issues and rides slightly smoother than the Mazda.

Voted Honda Civic, if I were you I would specifically look at the 2013-2015 model if your looking for a reliable and fun car.And if you can drive manual, go for an SI.I own a tuned 2013 Si sedan.

If you go 2016+ Civic and up, you will have to go with a 1.5T model, which had some issues with oil dilution the first few years If you live in a mostly cold climate area, you will need the car is FULLY warmed up on short trips before you turn off the car.Warm climate area not really an issue.

Nothing equals Honda finish and reliability when it comes to economy cars.

Market is terrible for buying used right now, good luck.

He said reliable.

A used MS3 is far from reliable.

I've own a 2008 Mazda 3. Never had any major issue, still has the og clutch. Take this car to mountains for ski trips, desert for camping etc. Fun to drive too. Not fast by any means as it's the base engine but with it being manual, I can make it go when needed.

Good arguement, there is a reason people don't keep them long. But keep believing whatever helps you sleep at night.

What year? Looks like 2014+ Mazda 3 is a solid bet.

This site has great realizability data. Better than mainstream JD Power and Consumer Reports.

Appreciate you sharing all this. I'm leaning Mazda 3 because I like the look and 2014+ has great reliability ratings (see above), but I haven't decided quite yet.

Either choice will work for your needs, the 3 will be cheaper price wise.

They're very reliable. I've owned two, fully bolted both and tuned them on E85. I put over 100k miles on them and they never had issues. I know the owners of both and they haven't had any issues outside of having to replace the turbos due to leaky seals since I beat the p*ss out of both cars. As said they're reliable.

You got the I Touring, S Touring, I Sport or S Sport?

I think that 2.0L engine vs 2.5L engine is that little speed difference.

Toyota Prius. Ultra reliable and the gas mileage is unreal

In YOUR experience they are , good for you.Any USED turbo econobox is NOT a good investment for RELIABILITY. I know multiple people who had issues with second hand MS3's.

Yeah that 2.5 guzzles gas a bit more but will get you that speed.

Mazda3 easy plair. Reliable af, 2016+ blows the econoboxes out the water when it comes to interior/tech. If you could aim for the 2019 refresh I’d go for that, either in GT or Touring trim level. Only downside is outside of sport mode it’s a little slow off launch

Q50’s come around every so often in that price point as well and they’re alright for what it is. If you’re able to deal with the “why didn’t you get a v8” crowd a v6 Dodge Challenger or Charger ain’t a bad bet. Worst issue you’ll have is the speed sensors going out. Outside of the luxury whips I can’t name a better c*ckpit than the Challengers current one.
