Tyrese Gibson Says Morbius is Delayed Again While Claiming It's Set in the MCU

While the COVID-19 pandemic forced every major studio to rearrange their theatrical schedules, few films faced as many delays as Morbius. The Spider-Man villain spin-off has been delayed several times over, moving from a July 31, 2020 release date to January 2022. Now, Morbius star Tyrese Gibson has claimed that the film is moving its release date again, this time to an October 2022 release. In another bold claim, the actor has stated that Morbius is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gibson made his comments in an interview with ComicBook.com while promoting his upcoming role in F9, the ninth mainline Fast & Furious movie.

"They just pushed the movie to October [2022] because they want to take advantage of that Halloween energy," Gibson said.

The interview continues with the question of Morbius being set in the MCU. Gibson responded with a simple "Yes." When the interviewer asked for clarification on the movie being set in "the Avengers world," Gibson repeated "Yes."

IGN has reached out to Sony for comment. We will update the story with any response that the studio has.

Earlier this month, Sony executive Sanford Panitch stated that "there actually is a plan" to connect the studio's Spider-Man Universe to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio has currently set the upcoming sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage for this September, Morbius for next year, and a Kraven the Hunter film for 2023. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was recently cast as Kraven for the upcoming spin-off.

Back in the world of mainline Spider-Man movies, the MCU-set Spider-Man: No Way Home is slated to debut in theaters this December. The upcoming sequel is expected to feature some multiverse elements, with two villains from previous Spider-Man iterations set to make appearances. Alfred Molina will reprise his role as Dr. Octopus, while Jamie Foxx's Electro will also make a return. Additionally, the likely appearance of Michael Keaton's Vulture in the Morbius trailer further hints at a potential tie-in between Sony's spin-offs and the MCU.

Update 6/15 2:09 pm PT:

Despite the claims by co-star Tyrese Gibson that Morbius has been delayed again to October 2022 and will be a part of the MCU, reports have confirmed that this is not the case.

According to GameSpot, Sony Pictures confirmed that Morbius is still on track to be released on January 28, 2022. Furthermore, Morbius will not join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, it will remain rooted in Sony Pictures' rival Marvel universe.

That trailer dropped a long time ago, maybe they cut that scene out now, but at the end of it they showed Morbius talking to Vulture (from Homecoming)...which tells you its set in the MCU

Sony on some dumb sh*t, they really are, they keep trying to make comic book movies without comic book guys and stray away from the lore... Dumbasses and instead of structuring a deal where they win they want to try and one up Fiege...

It's not in the MCU per se. Basically Spider-Man and Spider-Man villains will exist in both the MCU and Sonyverse but the rest of the universes will ignore each other. That's why Vulture is in this but you'll never see Captain America in a Sony film. And I bet Sony will allow the characters they develop to appear in Spider-Man's MCU films but likely can't be referenced outside of those.

That isn't announced but that looks to be the concession Sony clawed from Marvel to extend the Spider-Man licensing agreement. That hasn't been announced but the silence from both sides makes me think a deal must be in place

Yeah he did get the bil, Tyrese just delayed the bil a little

The deal wasn't finalized and he went on live celebrating, and they lowered the offer

Vulture is a Sony character. Sony characters only appear alongside Peter in the MCU and can't appear w/o him in the partnership.

People tend to forget all 3 films are Sony films and before Peter popped up in Civil War, it was confirmed that once the partnership was over, he would have a universe established in the SPUMC.

Vulture poppin up in the trailer is the same as Venom, Kraven or Morbius having a film. All 4 are Sony characters. You can't name a Sony character that appeared in the MCU w/o relevance to Peter.

As of now, the deal is for 1 more shared film (NWH) and an appearance. People are hoping what Tyrese says is true because then the Sony/MCU deal can continue.

Sony denying it is a clear sign that it is being heavily discussed. You have no leverage when the cast is saying, yeah the deal is complete.

It seems pretty clear that the deal is either inked or agreed to in principle. Holland is very Not Worried about being able to continue the status quo and has said as much which is a decided shift from how he presented about a year ago when things really did seem more in the air. And Sony's VP's statements about the MCU's success being good for them points to that as well. I think they just have a strategic announcement planned which probably includes announcing the next Spider-Man films. I think the announcement comes after No Way Home drops to keep Spider-Man in the news for as long as possible then rolling right into the Spiderverse 2 rollout...

After his melt down a few years back.... can't take him seriously or listen to anything Tyrese says.... he talks too much. Plus the Morbius film trailers look like a*s cheeks.... the sh*t will flop. No one wants to see that sh*t......

Yeah they're intertwined. What's done is done. Money talks and the biggest pile of money is hiding behind saying they will never join, picking the favorites, and dropping them in as a surprise while Superfans lose their minds. If spiderman can join the avengers and vulture can cameo then the lines already been crossed. And off something happens once, you know how the universe works...
