They were packed on that balcony. Too many people, or not enough structural support. The balcony dropped like a trap door.

The people who rented where at fault. They were not to have more then 6 people there. There were called and told to leave when they brought more people. Then moments later the deck broke. I see the home owner winning anr the renter having to pay for the house and medical bills. You sign contracts when you rent these places. Lawyer getting paid either way.

a live load for a deck is 40 pounds per square foot including furniture.

it was damn near shoulder to shoulder.

if you take the avg weight per guest at 150lbs thats damn near triple the live load capacity.

a brand new deck wouldnt support that

I counted about 20 people on that patio.

I'm sure this is one of those Airbnb situations where it was just rented out....but, that lease agreement definitely should have had some sort of a stipulation on the weight limitation for the back patio.

It's one of those things that you would never think about of course, but, guarantee the lawyers are already combing the lease agreement for such a stipulation.

Nah. They had way too many people on that deck. Decks built over cliffs don't have the support that a typical deck with a grounded foundation would have.

A friend of mine is a contractor and the stays clear in decks that aren't reinforced with iron rods or concrete. He says decks like the one in the video collapse all the time due to erosion and limited weight capacity.

I mean, if you build it with the right materials, couldn't you conceivably build a deck that can accommodate that many people?

Basically a deck is a elevator............does the same sh*t no matter the size....but the larger the crowd the bigger youd like it to be.
