This isn't new. It's not unusual for new systems to sell at a loss. The real money is in add ons. Xbox does the same thing

I was telling n*ggas earlier in the thread about having gamepass on other consoles. Console sales result in losses. Microsoft is likely going to get out the console market and boost up their cloud computing. Once they make it where you can play the game on any tv or computer with internet access, that would be an easy sell to parents. $20 a month vs $560 for a console and one game is an easy pick.

Have someone else make the console (and take the loss)
Put your software on it for $20 a month
??????
Profit

This isn’t new. They sold PS4 at a loss too. And ps3 too if I’m not mistaken.

This is what I came to say. Pretty much ever since the OG Xbox/PS2 generation, the model has always been to put as much technology in the console at a loss for the first 2-3 years of the life cycle and make up the difference from software and other more lucrative divisions of the company. It's funny that most people don't know that Microsoft originally got into games with the express purpose of using their console as a farm system to port games over to PC more easily to increase PC sales. They don't even need video games. Sony on the other hand...well...its good for them that Playstation is awesome, cause they'd be in trouble if it wasn't.

$20 a month is $240 a year so in 2 years you’d be at the price of a console. The PS4/Xbox One lasted almost 8 years and still going. 8 years at $20 a month is $1,920. That’s a ridiculous trade off. Especially since you can buy a console at 0% interest these days.

Then you have to factor in internet providers that charge their customers for going over a set amount of data, which you’d easily do streaming games on a mid-tier plan. It’d force consumers to get the most expensive plan. I know you’d have to pay for services every year like online/gamepass with consoles but it’s nowhere near the cost of a $20 subscription to stream games.

Big business model. I worked for GE and it's the same way. Sell engines, blades etc at a loss and sell the repair and maintenance... with Sony it's the platform, the number of games released and I think they will do updates at a cost for certain games... They are gonna make their money. Believe that.

I wonder if on the next generation console they'll start with a ridiculous price and reduce it as time goes on. It's obvious they're under pricing their product. They lost millions of potential dollars and let scalpers make that profit.

I'm not saying the price is great for consumers, but they'll need to raise the price to make a profit or get more people subscribed. Gamepass Ultimate is already like $15 a month if you are paying retail for it. If they keep adding AAA titles on launch day, I would expect the price to go up. It's easier to justify $17-20 a month when you are getting $60-70 games on there every few months. They could even do Gamepass tiers to keep the cost down and you only get the AAA titles with Ultimate.

They'll be able to attract more people with the lower entry price, ability to play anywhere with internet, and the fact that you can just pay month to month. Not everyone wants to pay the cost of a console, Xbox live, and a game up front. I'm sure they'll also have deals for people who want to get a year's worth of Gamepass (like they currently do).
