Talk about a double standard.

Hard to deny that it doesn’t play out in the NFL, a place where the playing field is supposed to be level. It’s supposed to be a place we hope the rest of society can get to in a perfect world — where the best person for the job actually gets it. Yes, regardless of race.

It’s how this country can be 76.3 percent white while the NFL is 70 percent Black.

But there are times when you still have to take a closer look and wonder to yourself if the league is always fair and honest in evaluating players with the same skill and talent.

This is definitely one of those times.

A Black quarterback with the same stats as Matt Stafford through his first five years would be considered a bum, a bust. That QB would probably be out of a starting gig and be a seldom-used backup making little money.

Oh, wait a minute. That Black QB is Jameis Winston.

On the other hand, Stafford was allowed to keep his job, earning millions and millions of dollars while not winning one playoff game or division title for the Lions in his 12 seasons in Detroit.

Now, Stafford — who was shipped to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff — is viewed as a savior in La-La Land.

Stafford is officially the Teflon QB. Just listen to the gushing commentary from NFL analysts about how great he is. Often, it sounds like they are talking about Aaron Rodgers.

There have been more excuses made for why Stafford failed in Detroit than all the untimely interceptions he has thrown in his career.

In Tampa, Winston was simply discarded, tossed out with the trash.

But an honest look at both quarterbacks will tell you they were basically the same player through their first five seasons in the league.

These stats cover the first five years of both of their careers. For Stafford, 2010 was taken out because of his injury, and his sixth year in 2015 was added in its place.

Winston, 27, was cut by the Tampa Bay Bucs after last season. He left the franchise as its all-time leader in passing yards and passing TDs.

For people who have forgotten, and have only focused on his 30 interceptions in 2019, Winston’s career got off to a great start. He was just the third rookie to throw for over 4,000 yards.

Over the next four seasons, he continued to excel and set career marks and franchise records.

In 2019, his final season in Tampa Bay, Winston led the NFL in passing yards, completions and attempts. He had 33 touchdowns and the league-high 30 picks. Without question, a bad number.

Still, Winston has talent. It’s the decision-making that needs to be worked on.

That’s the difference.

Despite not winning in Detroit, just like Winston in Tampa Bay, Stafford was given the chance to play on, and improve. Winston was shown the door and signed on as a backup quarterback with the New Orleans Saints.

For the record, Peyton Manning, in his first season with the Indianapolis Colts threw a league-high 28 picks. In fact, he had 100 interceptions over his first five seasons — more than Winston.

Somehow, Winston is treated as if were the absolute worst quarterback to play the game, and teams aren’t willing to give him time or guidance to correct his mistakes, like Stafford was given.

Let’s be frank — there is no way a Black quarterback would have been able to stick around 12 seasons in the NFL on the same team and not be held accountable for never winning a playoff game. With Stafford under center, the Lions went 0-3 in the postseason.

Despite being the league’s No. 1 overall draft pick in 2009, Stafford didn’t elevate his teammates, didn’t make them better. In fact, lesser quarterbacks have been able to get their team victories they had no business getting.

Heck, even backup Nick Foles played the game of his life and helped the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl.

This year in the playoffs, Winston, in his first playoff action in his career, threw one pass for the Saints. It was a 56-yard TD strike.

Yet, all the fuss has been made about Stafford and his wonderful career.

What a fu*king idiot.

Stafford is a top 10 QB. In terms of arm talent, he’s just a tier below Mahomes. He played for one of the worst organizations in the NFL and never had a running game, good OL, or defense. That’s why teams still value him, not his skin color.

I agree, only a white QB can get away without winning for over a decade.

Nah... Stafford actually talented and tough enough to be the QB of a Championship contender. This ain't Cutler who had the talent but lacked the fortitude... This ain't Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr that have the great mechanics & instincts but lack the actual overall talent... Stafford got it all... His issue is making THAT PLAY in the moment of truth during a big game

Stafford is proof that if you’re white and above average at QB you can start for a decade or longer. Damn near impossible when you’re black. Being a “successful” black QB is just like being black & successful in real life, certain folks are either mad you got to their level or they praise you as some sort of novelty. And the root for both is everyone knows you have to work 2x harder than a certain group to get to the same destination. It’s either “how’d you get here?” Or “how did you get here!?”.

Winston is a bad comparison because of the off the field issues. I’m a bears fan so I’d take him.

Exactly.

I’ve made this point for months when this topic gets brought up.

Every black QB who keeps a starting job in this league has to be damn near perfect. Mahomes, Wilson, Watson, Lamar. Murray is right on their heels. Dak is up there as well, but even that’s not enough and people still want him replaced. There is 0 ROOM TO BE AVERAGE & BLACK. Teddy & Cam both are losing their jobs this offseason for decent, unspectacular seasons but the bar is just so high if you’re not playing elite football as a black QB you’re out of a job.

Y’all love to throw Jameis name out there like he wasn’t the fastest QB in NFL history to 20,000 passing yards at age 25. Thats a pace for 80,000 yards in 16 years. But but interceptions All interception jokes aside prolific passing yards is the only thing Favre has in any discussion about great QBs The energy is different.

I can't even think of any non-white QB who has come close to a decade of mediocrity and keeping their spot unquestioned. n*ggas was trynna get rid of Tua just because he didn't come out guns blazing this season, but people still defend Sam Darnold.

And? They had the stats, they just didn't translate to wins.

Here's what Stafford and co didn't have since he was drafted

A run game. Only ONE 1000+ yard rusher. One. In all 11 seasons he only had 1 1000 yard rusher. That's ridiculous.

He only had a TOP 5 defense ONCE and he made the playoffs when he did. And a top 15 defense twice, and he made the playoffs each time, coincidence? Nah

Rob Parker is a*s and his argument is kindergarden status. Stafford is a terrible example for his bullsh*t racial argument. If there's one to be made, this is a terrible example to use. Stafford stayed and played for a team that put TWO ALL TIME LEGENDS into retirement when they could've still played. Cmon now

Dak been playing better than Stafford over the past five seasons and they don't even wanna pay him, but the Rams will give up two first rounders and a QB who has had playoff success for a 33 year old white QB with only three playoff appearances and not a single win.

Now while I do agree white QB's get more slack in the league for one reason or another, this isnt the case.

No Lies Told! white privileges...Stafford had Megatron in his prime and couldn't win 2 playoff games. If that was a blk qb, they would have been pushed to a back up role.

Dak career has been way better than Wentz and Goff... they both got guaranteed deals while Dak has to f*ght for a deal....Fast forward, the Eagles and Rams don't want those qbs after overpaying

Murray and Herbert have not proven to be better QB’s than Stafford yet. Some of you are too quick to crown young QB’s. How many guys do we need to see regress before we learn patience?

Lamar might be better in the regular season, but Stafford has shown the ability to lead comebacks with his arm, which you often need to win playoff games when everything isn’t going right. Lamar has yet to show he can comeback with his arm. This is the eye ball test that a lot of you miss because you think football is about stats.

Prescott also has done nothing to say he’s definitively better.
