Tesla has remotely disabled driver a*sistance features on a used Model S after it was sold to a customer, Jalopnik reports. The company now claims that the owner of the car, who purchased it from a third-party dealer — a dealer who bought it at an auction held by Tesla itself — “did not pay” for the features and therefore is not eligible to use them.

The features were enabled when the dealer bought the car, and they were advertised as part of the package when the car was sold to its owner. It’s a peculiar situation that raises hard questions about the nature of over-the-air software updates as they relate to vehicles.

The owner in question, who Jalopnik refers to as Alec, purchased the car last December. The dealer bought the car a month earlier from a Tesla auction, with both “Enhanced Autopilot” and “Full Self Driving Mode” features intact, according to Jalopnik, which reviewed documents related to the car’s ownership and sale.

The dealer then listed the Model S, advertising both features. However, unbeknownst to the dealer, Tesla had independently conducted a software “audit” of the car after selling it, and disabled those features in a December update. The end result: when Alec picked up the car on December 20th, he did not have access to all its advertised features.

That really makes no sense if it’s true. Why spend the money on the extra capacity when manufacturing the car? The software has already been developed but the price in manufacturing the batteries fluctuates due to the cost of raw materials.

Yes, but it also sets a dangerous precedent.

This isn't much unlike the scandal that erupted when people who had purchased books on their Amazon Kindle had the licenses to their purchases mysteriously disappear after some time.

In the future, the concept of physical ownership of products will be all but eradicated. Everything is moving toward a direction of licensing, which diminishes the value of any product we otherwise would have owned forever.

I don’t disagree with 90% of what you said. The only difference is that I have long ago surrendered my ownership in anything tech related. I bought 4:44 on ITunes. Then that sh*t went away.

The shift is that the car is now merged into the tech category like an iPhone.

Think of the possible consequences of this standard.

Eventually, there will be no more physical cash. And if you ever become persona non grata to the wrong corporation or powerful entity, your funds simply get switched off by the bank, if not seized altogether in the blink of an eye. It's civil forfeiture taken to a whole new extreme. To me, that's a terrifying future to anticipate. China is already beginning to implement this concept in the form of their .

Damn you took this sh*t to another level, not mad about it. My pessimistic mind would never have opted into this, but idk how to feel overall.

I’m young enough that this tech universe is natural me. Meaning, we should be capitalizing on this new economy and using that to build theoretical moats around our lives to avoid that type of future that could come.

That social credit sh*t in China is unnerving. Especially when Combined with public facial recognition. sh*t, we surrendered to GPS years ago, not that big of a step forward when you think about the power of a “powerful entity”.

Absolutely I'll find the article but this information came out during the big hurricane in Houston. They sent an update to those cars who had purchased the lower models to allow them to get more range to leave the area

It’s true as it’s more about streamlining the production process for efficiency.

So In theory the lower range ones could be even be priced lower If they physically had less capacity.

But I’d say it’s a great sales tactic if they chose to impose it.

Sell a car physically capable of higher range, software limit it. Offer a higher range for a higher price than if you were to get it during original purchase.

I looked around a few years back and apparently the cars run on a variation of Ubuntu. People were rooting their cars and enabling features like autopilot, unlocking their batteries, even installing full blown Ubuntu to watch videos on their console lol. So - if you know your way around Linux and you're handy with a CLI, you could potentially have full control of your Tesla's OS.

no it isnt, dealership advertised it therefore they did pay for it. the dealership also purchased it from the tesla auction, this one is on tesla for sure. either they owe the features to the new owner or they owe money to the dealership.
