'Fortnite' Is Officially a High School and College Sport

Thanks to L.A.-based startup PlayVS, Fortnite is set to become an official high school sport and college sport, according to TechCrunch.

PlayVS explained how it will work. Schools will be placed in conferences based on where they're located, where they will compete with other schools. Teams will be made up of two players, as Duos. Players must compete on a campus with a coach, and can use any device they'd like.

The first official season will start on March 2. If you're interested in participating, registration is open until February 17 for high schoolers and February 26 for colleges. The winningest teams at the end of the season will head to the playoffs, and the championship will take place in May.

"Millions of people are already playing Fortnite - its become a part of culture." Delane Parnell, founder and CEO of PlayVS, said in a statement. "We hope adding the title to our game lineup and expanding platform access to colleges inspires the gamer in everyone to get involved in their schools programs."

"Epics been an instrumental partner in our mission to create a scalable program with no limitations on participation, and we look forward to working with additional publishers to power our college programs," he continued.

Presumably, everyone isn't happy about the news. Last year, a group of Canadian parents filed a lawsuit that claimed the popular game is "as addictive as cocaine."

I disagree with this. Competitive gaming just like any thing else in life you have to work hard on your craft and grind to be the best. High school kids and college kids wouldn't have the needed time to fully dive in what it takes to become a professional cuz they have to focus on classes

I may not agree but E-Sports is a thriving and worldwide industry. You got some LOL players that make 10-15k a month. Then you got gamers to monetize their youtube channels like Chris Smoove and Cashnasty. They are secretly partnered with 2k and making bread that way. Ain't no way in the hell does either of them have a job with as much content as the put out.

Technically it's not a school sport if it's not sanctioned and approved by the school boards and state. This is just an after school club. A video game club isn't new.

They may not be trying to be competitive on that level. They just trying to compete on a high school level like bball and football.

e-sports counts

this makes more money and fills larger stadiums than a lot of sports

and this is a mobile game that makes insane money:

with 500 million players and has a strong pro scene as well. not to league of legends level but its the secon most popular

you gotta take a shower right after playing that bullsh*t, especially if you play on PC swinging a mouse around on 400 dpi. fu*k that game, I feel more beat playing that sh*t than when I'm dragging 300 pound spools of cable up the steps

Obviously, but this is the same reason kids play sports in highschool, and that's why they compete with people their own age. I think this sh*t is retarded but your logic doesnt really work here.

I'm with you dawg. I should've clarified my stance

Definition is for those who say it shouldn't be a sport. Sports are basically anything that provides skill+competition.

Which esports definitely provides. Nay sayers just living in the past where it's unheard of

I wish Esports was poppin like this 10yrs ago when I was in HS.
I woulda focused on getting that Youtube/twitch $$$

Baseball requires athleticism and to a lesser degree so does golf

None of your points further the argument that it's a sport.
A sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. There is nothing athletic about sitting in front of a TV, it's a game and in those larger venues it's a spectacle. There's nothing wrong with it being just that. Don't try to make it more than it is.
