Jan 25 - NYC Bans Cashless Businesses

visit this link Cashless businesses are now banned in NYC

New York Cityís restaurants and other retail establishments will no longer be allowed to reject cash payments under legislation passed by the City Council on Thursday.

Supporters of the bill say cashless businesses requiring credit cards and electronic payments like Apple Pay discriminate against poor people who may not have bank accounts or credit cards ó as well as minors.

ďThe City of New York cannot allow the digital economy to leave behind the 25 percent of New Yorkers who are chronically unbanked and underbanked,Ē said Councilman Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx), the billís sponsor.

The legislation, which was approved 43-3, also prohibits businesses from charging cash-paying customers a higher price than those using credit.

The bill is also backed by Mayor Bill de Blasio and is expected to become law in nine months.

It is expected to put a severe crimp in the operations of no-cash chains Dos Toros and By Chloe.

Violators would face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense and up to $1,500 for additional violations.

Similar bans already exist in other parts of the country, including Philadelphia and San Francisco.

The three council members who voted against the bill were Staten Island Republicans Steve Matteo and Joe Borelli and Brooklyn Democrat Kalman Yeger.

Had this at the gas station I worked at, the fu*k you swiping a card for some little debbie snacks. $5 minimum or you can pay an extra .50 for the swipe. Between that and us not taking quest/food stamps people used to be pissed.

Sidenote: Can they make the gyro place by my house take credit? Feel like every gyro place I go to only takes cash, I get why tho.

Those businesses pay transaction fees to those card companies everytime u swipe your card, so its not just in NYC. They only turning out profit if you swipe a certain amount

We have in New Orleans and it's already illegal with the credit card companies yet the businesses do it any way, at this point I walk out based off principle. A card convenience fee is only $.50
If your swiping 1.00 and the fee is .50 cents and the cost of the product is .50 cents, probably more, they didnt make any money or lost money. That's good business

not really. you got sales tax. wages, then state tax, federal tax, and unemployment taxes for the employee. they probably heating or cooling the place. plus mortgage/rent.

i mean i can understand an argument of denying people is bad business but its also not logical to not be making money. from a customer point of view you say, they heat the place and pay the mortgage and the employee anyway. but from a business standpoint youd say you arent in business to do favors for everyone. someone is paying for it.
