Virgil Abloh says streetwear is ‘gonna die’ soon

image

Ask not for whom the Abloh tolls, it tolls for streetwear.

Virgil Abloh, Off-White CEO and artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, was recently asked by Dazed about the future of “the idea of streetwear.”

His prognosis? Not great, Bob!

“I would definitely say it’s gonna die, you know?” Abloh said. “Like, its time will be up. In my mind, how many more T-shirts can we own, how many more hoodies, how many sneakers?”

“I think that like we’re gonna hit this like, really awesome state of expressing your knowledge and personal style with vintage,” the designer continued. “There are so many clothes that are cool that are in vintage shops and it’s just about wearing them. I think that fashion is gonna go away from buying a boxfresh something; it’ll be like, ‘Hey I’m gonna go into my archive.'”

Good news for those of us with extensive closets and/or a few versatile workhorse pieces, bad news for … Supreme? Dumbgood? Unclear.

Abloh apparently doesn’t have any plans for a funeral for the fashion movement he’s something of a godhead for, but his 2020 plans do include a Louis Vuitton x NIGO capsule collection and an Off-White flagship opening in Miami.

Delusional and out of touch.

Fashion world is not the real world. As long as there is a wealth gap...there will be street wear.

Streetwear is such a broad term now a days anyways. Varies from hip hop to skate culture all the way to damn near goth look

Somebody said in an interview that all the real n*ggas are wearing skin tight pants while all the dorks and hipsters are wearing baggy clothes again. sh*ts all backwards

The older I get the more ridiculous that street wear sh*t to me. Only time I'm dressing in "streetwear" is when it's cold as fu*k and I'm throwing on a cheap hoodie and sweats, not some sh*t they tryna mark up by a million because they slapped a logo on.

Most of the "bosses" in streetwear are vultures and hypebeasts to the max too.

Yeah some guys get ahead of them selves! People have been wearing plane t shirts for ever,! There would have to be am evolution in clothing not going back to something that was! Cycles repeat itself but it's hard to even say tshirts, hoodies and tennis shoes are street wear! More people are going to be wearing more of what they want to Express themselves! It might be a tshirt or tennis shoes!

This n*gga is only half right. sh*t won't ever die cause your vintage pieces go outta style, stop fitting, or get fubar. Then you need to buy new pieces, some of those are streetwear pieces. This n*gga makin it sound like there's enough clothes on earth for everyone to just keep wearin everyone else's old sh*t. What math class he take?

How is he out of touch if he’s pretty much the streetwear King alongside Kanye?

Hes right.

Everybody buys box fresh kicks and clothes these days and then resells a week or two later. Only difference is if you try and resell the latest clothing then you typically end up losing $$$ unless you buying supreme or off white.

An authentic look pulls from the entire zeitgeist not just what is current on IG or from the latest season.

I’m already in liquidation of my stuff the plan is to get down to 8 pairs of sneakers 5 pairs of jeans and a few hoodies and t shirts. I have a job that I have to wear shoes kakis and button ups. Having an OD amount of sneakers is pure stupidity. n*ggas will have 200 pair of sneakers and 1 pair of feet.

The streetwear hype beast era has already been dead. When’s the last time you saw someone rock apcs with limited edition kicks or vintage js and a $60 t shirt with a quirky message or design on it from a rare company?

Same sh*t happened to that as it does with every fashion trend, corny try hards and bums hop on the wave and make it feel lame so new trends emerge.

Same sh*t happens to slang.

Now if you define streetwear as the average fly up and coming accessible clothing trend of the moment then yes we will always have that but streetwear as it was when the word streetwear was at its peak is dying or near dead and had the normal run of about any trend, 08-16 was probably the heyday.
