Masai Considering Knicks Move Despite Warnings

Masai Ujiri might have interest in leaving the Toronto Raptors for the New York Knicks, but some around the NBA donít believe thatís a good idea.

3
According to Howard Beck of Bleacher Report, influential voices in the NBA have strongly advised Ujiri not to take the Knicks job if owner James Dolan fires Steve Mills and offers Ujiri the president role.

Influential voices in the NBA have strongly advised Ujiri not to take the job, if itís ever offered, sources say. But those same sources say Ujiri might do it anyway, if the money is right, if heís granted the necessary autonomy and if Dolan funds Giants of Africa as generously as the Raptors ownership group has.

The Knicks fired head coach David Fizdale on Friday. They have the worst record in the East and Mills and GM Scott Perry donít appear to know what they are doing.

After missing out on stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency, the Knicks used their cap space on Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, Taj Gibson, Marcus Morris, Wayne Ellington, Elfrid Payton and Reggie Bullock. Thatís a lot of power forwards on one team and guys who donít really move the needle.

No wonder Kristaps Porzingis requested a trade from the Knicks. He could see things werenít going to get better even after Phil Jackson was let go and Carmelo Anthony was traded.

Ujiri should think long and hard about this decision. He has a good thing going with the Raptors.

Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri turned down a lucrative extension from the Raptors last summer and would be intrigued by the challenge of fixing the New York Knicks, according to Howard Beck of Bleacher Report.

The Knicks fired head coach David Fizdale on Friday and are widely expected to move on from president Steve Mills as well.

Sources also say Ujiri would be intrigued by the challenge of fixing the Knicks, the chance to build something from scratch and, not insignificantly, by the opportunity to elevate his Giants of Africa philanthropy by working in the New York market.

Ujiriís contract is believed to run through 2021 but with an out clause under certain circumstances. He turned down a lucrative extension last summer, sources said, leaving the impression that he wants to keep his options open.

The Knicks have been a walking disaster for years under owner James Dolan. Ujiri turned the Raptors organization around by acquiring Kawhi Leonard and delivering the franchise its first-ever title last season.

If Ujiri made the Knicks a winner again, the city of New York might build him a statue since the organization is currently the laughingstock of the NBA.

Ujiri, though, should be careful here. The grass isnít always greener. He has a good thing going with the Raptors and it seems like the Knicks will always be putrid as long as Dolan is there, no matter who is the president or coach.

They had the Giants of Africa night on thursday, i think it was. I don't know what they did, if they held a gala again or not. I just find the timing curious right now.

I'm thinking that maybe this is a negotiation tactic on Masai's part. I don't think he wants to leave. Knicks bin offering him money for about 4yrs now. So it can't simply be the money.

I think wants to stay, but he wants more of something out of MLSE.

I read an article earlier today that used virtually the same wording in the heading that was used back when the rumors of washington trying to get him. Almost as if a representative of Masai had written the exact same statement regarding the reports.... and put it out there again.

He's accomplished everything that a Toronto sports franchise has not in 25 years. MLSE is known to be cheap and are run by white collar Jewish men. He got them the title and deserves a hefty raise but seems like they wont budge.

If hes leaving he will leave for a bigger role like being commish of the African Basketball League that's set to start soon. He wont leave Toronto to NYC cleaning up the mess in NYC that's been ongoing for decades with Dolan. These rumors come out every couple months to put pressure on MLSE top execs to give him what hes asking for.

I’m 0% worried he leaves for the Knicks ...the wiz job offer a few months back was way more of a threat as his wife’s from DC but even that was a long shot

I think the stink at the end of the day is truly Dolan.

But I dont thnk he is the real blame at the end of the day.

Dolan is willing to pay the players which is all you need a owner to do.

Dolan doesnt get involved in the ON-COURT business which is where the Knicks have the biggest problem.

You cant win without playing defense. Which is what the Knicks are Notorious for.

You cant win without giving 100% effort. Which is what the Knicks are Notorious for.

And you cant create a winning culture, if every year your roster turnover is close to 8-10 new players. Which is what the Knicks are notorious for.

Do I believe Dolan should sell the Knicks. OF COURSE! But realistically that aint never going to happen, unless they offer him a TRILLION dollars.

So stop with this "Dolan needs to go sh*t" and start worrying about the things that need to be done that can fix the Knicks. Which is putting the people in place that can fix the problems.

donnie Walsh made them competitive again in 2 years after Isaiah Thomas era and then Dolan got rid of him and Scott Perry took over

and Dolan moved Isaiah to the wnba NY liberty

That's because they signed an elite talent (although his body was fragile). Walsh also passed on DeMar Derozan and Brandon Jennings for Jordan Hill. Also, he passed on Eric Gordon (i know he had the issue with his arm, so what) for Dino Gallinari.

Also, it was the brief Grunwald era after Donnie left then Mills came in. Perry only been with the team a couple a years or so.

Walsh wasn't the best at drafting talent but he could find good talent through trades

He was able to clear the roster through trade for Melo but the trade was just as much Walsh as Masai who was Denver gm at the time
