Camíron Opens Up About His Nas Beef: ďI Didnít Want To Go That FarĒ

The Dipset rapper feuded with Nas in the early 2000s.

Cam'ron is the guest on next week’s episode of Elliott Wilson and Brian “BDot” Miller’s Rap Radar Podcast. In a preview of the interview, the Dipset co-founder spoke about his now-squashed feud with Nas and expressed regret for crossing the line with some of his lyrics.

“There’s some things that I found out about afterwards that I probably wouldn’t have said if I knew,” Cam'ron said. “Do I regret it? Yeah, because I didn’t want to go that far. But, at that particular time in my mindset—and the n*ggas I was running around with, they didn’t give a fu*k.”

Earlier in the conversation, Cam explained he and Dipset responded to with multiple, vicious disses because they knew Nas was at his peak:

At that particular era, it was like, ‘Look, this is Nas. We can’t just do one song because he could come back with another song and kind of k*ll everything, you know what I’m saying? So let’s just bombard the situation, you know what I’m saying?’ That was the only way we felt that we could handle it because Nas was such a legend at that particular time.
Cam also remembered not understanding why Nas decided to diss him in the first place. “What happened was, Nas just dissed me for no reason,” the Harlem rapper said. “We didn’t even do nothing to him. He’s more mad at Hot 97.”

Nas kicked off the feud back in 2002, while he was still beefing with JAY-Z. At the time, Hot 97 squashed Nas' plan to stage a mock lynching of JAY while headlining the radio station’s annual Summer Jam concert.

After being dropped from the performance, Nas went on rival station Power 105.1 and ranted about Hot 97. He also dissed Cam’s most recent album, Come Home With Me.

“If you listen to 90 percent of the rappers, they’re not even creative,” Nas said about the lyrical content of MCs getting airplay on Hot 97. “I buy these people’s albums and [they] ain’t talking about nothing. From Cam, to everybody… I like Cam and everything—he’s a good lyricist—but [Come Home With Me] is wack. Y'all brothers gotta start rapping about something that’s real.”

In response, Cam and Dipset fired back with a series of disses, starting with a freestyle over Nas' own song, “Hate Me Now.”

On the track, Cam took aim at Nas' family. This included the rapper’s daughter, his baby’s mother, and his mother, who had recently passed away:

Before the AK’s in your face
Take your daughter, R Kelly, have my way with her face!
And your mom’s a whip wop head
And you claim to be a hip-hop head?

Nas retaliated on his Bravehearts posse cut, “Zone Out,” from 2002, God’s Son. The Queensbridge rapper brought up rumors of Cam contracting HIV as well as his gun charges:

You got a house in Virginia, the only way you sicker than us
Gettin' bagged with .22’s now you’s a ridiculous fu*k
No need for the gun play, it’s okay, ‘cause you dyin’ anyway

Fellow Dipset members Juelz Santana and Jim Jones followed up with multiple Nas disses of their own, culminating with the posse cut, “I Really Mean It,” from 2003’s Diplomatic Immunity. On the outro, Jones says:

Eastside, and as for that lame man, Nasir
I ain’t even gon' say your last name
‘Cause that’s mine, I catch you, you know what it is
You f*g**t!

The beef mostly simmered down over the next few years, aside from a few subliminal shots. In 2014, Cam and Nas squashed their issues for good, appearing in an Instagram photo together. Miss Info reported on the encounter:

According to my source, Nas and Cam saw each other, got to talking without any awkwardness or old tension. The photo wasn’t forced. Respect all around. And the best part, there was even talk of future collaboration. Maybe that was just polite lip service but maybe, if we’re lucky, there will be a k*lla x Godson Dipset x Bravehearts song someday.

While such a collaboration may never happen, at least cooler heads prevailed with time.

Cam didn’t want it with Nas lyrically, that’s why he didn’t even attempt to rap on his first diss track.

Rap diss songs were simply dudes going after each others title. Like Krs vs Mc Shan.

Do you remember the songs?

Yes.

Do you give a phuck after its all said and done and they continue to make good songs?

Not really.
