Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a training day prequel

A prequel to Denzel Washington's Training Day is reportedly in the works at Warner Bros. Released in 2001, the original movie starred Ethan Hawke as Jake Hoyt, an officer in line for a potential job in the LAPD narcotics division who is taken on an evaluation by Washington's Alonzo Harris. Jake quickly learns that Harris is a corrupt cop with a whole lot of demons in his closet, as his day becomes increasingly wild and dangerous.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by David Ayer, Training Day was a hit with $104 million in box office grosses on a reported budget of $45 million. When Oscar season came around, both Hawke and Washington received nominations, with the latter winning for Best Actor, the second of his two career wins (the first coming in 1990 when he won Best Supporting Actor for Glory). A series version of the movie premiered in 2017 starring Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell as completely new characters, but was canceled after one season following Paxton's tragic death.

As reported by Collider, Training Day is getting yet another look from Warner Bros., this time in prequel form. Nick Yarborough (who penned the Black List script A Letter from Rosemary Kennedy) has been tapped to write, with no director yet attached. The story reportedly follows Alonzo Harris ten years before the events of the original movie, at a time when Los Angeles was on-edge in the wake of the infamous Rodney King beating.

No actors are yet attached to the film either, but speculation will no doubt heat up about Washington's son John David Washington tackling the role of a younger Alonzo Harris. The younger Washington is himself already an acclaimed performer who earned Best Actor nominations from both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes for his performance in Spike Lee's incendiary drama BlacKkKlansman. Of course, the elder Washington himself can't be counted out as a possible choice to play Alonzo Harris again given the popularity of de-aging technology, the likes of which was used to shave decades off of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino for their roles in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. Then again, de-aging actors for a handful of flashback scenes is one thing, but Washington would need to be de-aged by 30 years for the entirety of the Training Day prequel, which might be too much to ask.

Whoever ends up taking on the role of Alonzo Harris in the Training Day prequel will obviously have a huge legacy to live up to, as Washington's performance in the original movie is still regarded as one of his best, and Harris remains one of the great bad-cop characters in movie history. It will be fascinating to see what other details are revealed about the prequel in the coming months, and indeed it will be interesting to see who ultimately lands the role of Harris.

Denzel is my favorite actor but I feel this movie is overrated, it’s not bad but isn’t particularly jaw dropping. I like him better in Pelham 123 and John q

Fuqua didnt base the character off Perez but Denzel wanted to resemble Perez in the flick. So, yeah kinda I guess. They say Denzel changed the ending too.

I don't think this is a bad thing for a studio. If the studios are aware that successful series breed more cash, why wouldn't they push it? I don't know how many box office releases are seeing a profit today that makes it worth investing in a movie vs other investments (real estate, stocks, etc...).
