52% of Americans are considered ‘middle class’—here’s how much money they earn

According to a 2018 report from the Pew Research Center, 52% of American adults live in “middle class” households. The median income of that group was $78,442 in 2016.

Pew defines the middle class as adults whose annual household income is two-thirds to double the national median. That’s after incomes have been adjusted for household size, since smaller households require less money to support the same lifestyle as larger ones.

About one-fifth of American households, 19%, are considered upper class, while 29% are lower class. The median income of upper class households was $187,872 in 2016. For lower income households, it was $25,624.

These numbers are in 2016 dollars and scaled to reflect a three-person household.

Pew looked at various household sizes. Here’s the income range you’d have to earn each year to be considered middle class, depending on the size of your family:

Household of one: $26,093 to $78,281
Household of two: $36,902 to $110,706
Household of three: $45,195 to $135,586
Household of four: $52,187 to $156,561
Household of five: $58,347 to $175,041

The share of U.S. adults considered middle class varies depending on where you live, Pew notes: “The 10 areas with the highest concentrations of middle class adults are located in the Midwest or the Northeast, with the exception of Ogden-Clearfield, Utah. These areas are also more reliant on manufacturing than the nation overall.”

The metro with the highest share is Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where 65% of adults are considered middle class.

Big facts it's such an amorphous term that means many and few all at the same time. It's so dependent upon where you live.

Doesnt make sense....one hoe can middle class be that big of a discrepancy (26k-78k) is two completely different lifestyles). Second, there was just an article saying the numbers quoted here would out you at the top percentage in the country but ur middle class according to this. 67k was top 25% for a person so 78k is prob top 15%. How is that "middle" class

If one of you can afford to work from home, that’s the way to go. Daycare is a rip-off

This is true. But the flip side is that I'm setting the best possible example for my two kids. I'm also really happy every day knowing that I have a really good thing going with my wife and my family. If we can keep it together for a few more years, I'll be retired by 40.

The relationship was hard as fu*k to build, almost fell apart several times, but we are just starting to get into a groove 7 years after being together.

The key to this is to live within your class. Some items shouldn’t be purchased by lower or middle class people. None of it is necessary

Those numbers are bullsh*t. If you're on the low end of any of those figures you're fu*king poor. Me and the wife make less than 90k together, no kids, and I consider us working poor. We have enough to get buy, but retirement right now seems like a pipe dream. What the fu*k happened to this country? Just two generations ago a family could get by on one salary, now it seems like people even use their free time to try and make extra money, calling that sh*t a side hustle lol.

i got a 3 year old and 8 month old in daycare. I’m so ready for my son to be done with diapers and formula...

Call it wild ignorant but once my kids are out of daycare I’m going to buy my Harley.

The only thing that's helped us is to try and get our monthly expenses down anywhere we can. One ex we just switched from Verizon to Metro and we're saving no BS about $200+ a month just on that. It seems like with all this extra bullsh*t tech they figured out a way to keep you on the hamster wheel forever. I hate to say it but in our worst times we've even gone without eating for a night. It's fu*ked up that someone could put in a solid 40, look after their money and still be hurting. There's almost no such thing as middle class anymore, if you're not upper middle you're just working poor. Hang in there bro, it gets easier if you make a plan and stick to it.

If you want financial freedom you gotta basically live without Damn near any expenses. I mean no apartment no car maybe a pre-paid phone definitely NO KIDS. Gotta hustle and save, live like nobody else today so one day you can live like nobody else as Fave Ramsey once said.
